Johnson Wagner celebrates during his final round

"... won't you pack your bags, we'll leave tonight..." Eddie Money’s song was a hit in Texas, cause the winner of the Shell Open would take home the 1.008.000 USD prize money but he would also catch the last spot at the Masters 2008.

One more reason to play well and focus during the four rounds on the par 72 Redstone GC Tournament Course in the Houston suburb of Humble. Some big names were there too, preparing for the first major of the season; Phil Mickelson, K.J. Choi and Padraig Harrington were among them.

The first round brought some low rounds of -9 (63) from the defending champion from 2007 Adam Scott and from Johnson Wagner. Charley Hoffman scored a 7-under 65 and Steve Stricker got to 6-under 66.

The players had to confirm the good form in order to remain in contention for the tournament or even to make it past the 36-hole cut. And some didn't manage to do that on Friday as the second round unfolded: Alejandro Canizares from Spain shot a first round 69 but then lost it in the second after a terrible 13-over 85; Dudley Hart collapsed in the same manner, only with a more "average" 77. Adam Scott's 76 was a surprise to everyone, but he later explained, after he withdrew from the tournament, that he had flu symptoms, he couldn't really get anything going and decided to call it a day in order to not endanger his Masters participation.

On the other side, there were those that managed to rally after a bad first round: Kevin Na pulled off a 68 after his first round 76 and made the cut, Robert Allenby and Frank Lickliter II did the same after first rounds of 3-over.

Saturday brought Chad Campbell and Geoff Ogilvy closer to the leader Johnson Wagner who posted under-par rounds of 69 on days 2 and 3. Campbell had a 65 after a 64 on Friday and he appeared to be on fire
after a slower first round. Bob Estes was close behind the leader as well.

The last 18 holes were a fight between the players in the last pairing and Geoff Ogilvy, two groups in front of them. While Ogilvy got off to a good start, being 3-under through the front-nine and Johnson Wagner was 2-under through the first nine, Chad Campbell struggled with just one birdie against two bogeys and a double-bogey. He looked out of the race but he birdied the 11th, 12th, 13th and 15th while Wagner was slowing down with 2 bogeys. Ogilvy finished at 4-under and 14-under for the tournament. He knew he couldn't win it unless the other two would have made huge mistakes on the last two holes. It wasn't the case and Wagner controlled his nerves against Campbell as he had a two-shot lead on the 18th tee. They both made par and Wagner became the last man to join the field at Augusta for the Masters. His win was a demonstration of calm as he didn't self-destruct after a couple of mistakes during his back-nine.

For Wagner competing at the Masters is a dream come true and a miracle when looking at his previous results this year. He missed the cut 6 times out of 9 events. He will enjoy his 72 holes surrounded by the azaleas at Augusta.

"... won't you pack your bags, we'll leave tonight..."
