Scott Verplank won this event in 2007, in the first championship held here since the great legend passed away. It was also the last to be played before the renovation of the course at TPC Four Seasons Resort Las Colinas, near Dallas. With the course ready for action just a couple of weeks before this year’s tournament, nobody knew the greens, nobody knew the yardages. It was a novelty to all the players and so low scores were not expected in the first rounds.

Scott Verplank was there to defend his title, as were other top players like Adam Scott, the top-ranked player in the field, Justin Leonard, Luke Donald, Sean O’Hair, Ryuji Imada, Rory Sabbatini and the fresh winner of the Masters tournament Trevor Immelman. They all came to take part in a tournament which raises the most money for charity on the PGA TOUR. This was part of “Lord” Byron’s legacy: to help those less fortunate than yourself, to be your brother’s keeper, to be your sister’s keeper.

The organizers also promised a big reward for the winning player’s caddy: the keys to a brand new Cadillac.

The first round on the par 70 course uncovered those who wouldn’t win the title, but kept things open for a lot of people, as the lowest scores were of 3-under. Immelman carded a 78, the second highest score on Thursday and Chad Campbell posted a 77. Only 24 players out of the 154 present, had under par scores on the first day. The course was winning. Mathew Goggin, Eric Axley and Ryan Moore had the only 67s while last year’s winner shot only a 2-over 72.

Friday saw some improvement in the scoring average of the field but the new firm greens posed a lot of problems to the players and many struggled to make the cut at +3. Among those who failed to make it to Saturday were Immelman, Campbell, Chris DiMarco, Imada, Matteson, Calcavecchia, Chopra and Sabbatini.

Frank Lickliter II posted a 65 as the lowest round on Friday, while Bart Bryant, Justin Leonard and John Mallinger all had 4-under rounds.

Sergio Garcia had an excellent third round with a 5-under 65, but was still 4 behind the leader, Adam Scott, who had balanced scores of 68, 67 and 67 on the first three days. Second place after 54 holes belonged to 4 players who were 3 behind Scott going into the final round: Kevin Sutherland, Charley Hoffman, Bart Bryant and Ryan Moore.

The final round saw Scott’s lead evaporate as he made a bogey on the 1^st hole and a double-bogey on the 5^th. Who was catching up with him? Ryan Moore, who made a bogey on the 2^nd hole, but then birdied the 7^th, 8^th and 10^th. Two back-to-back bogeys on the 13^th and 14^th nearly saw Moore run out of contention, but he rallied with birdies on the 16^th and 17^th and arrived in the clubhouse at 7-under for the tournament.

Meanwhile, in the group behind him, Scott had a chance for eagle from about 8 feet, but missed it and settled for a birdie. That was on the par 5 16^th hole. He saved par on the tough par 3 17^th, after his 1^st shot landed way left on a huge green, with the pin placement on the far right. An enormous drive and a reasonably good approach shot on the par 4 18th brought him to about 10 feet left of the pin. He needed a birdie putt to stay in the tournament and force a playoff with clubhouse-resting Ryan Moore. His nerves didn’t get the best of him and he made the crowd go wild with his birdie putt. Ryan Moore came out of the clubhouse.

On the 18th, the first hole of the playoff, both had birdie opportunities but both players missed. On the second hole of the playoff, the par 3 17^th where water came into play on the front right of the green, Scott had a birdie opportunity from about 12 feet, but missed again. Moore’s first shot was in the fringe on the left, about where Scott had his ball during regulation, but managed to two-putt and extend play.

On the third hole of the playoff, again the par 4 18^th, Scott drove his tee-shot into the fairway bunker and then hit his approach shot to about 48 feet right of the pin. Moore fired his second pin-high, but just off the green on the left. This is the moment when Scott made a jaw-dropping putt from 48 feet for birdie, with Moore watching in disbelief. He had a chance to extend the playoff with a putt from off the green, but his ball trickled past just 2 inches left of the cup. It wasn’t meant to be for Moore, who is still searching for his first-ever win on the PGA TOUR. Meanwhile Scott made it his 6^th win on the tour.

Prima rundă pe traseul de par 70 a oferit o indicaţie în privinţa celor ce nu aveau să câştige titlul, dar a păstrat uşa deschisă pentru mulţi alţi jucători, cele mai joase scoruri fiind de 3-sub-par. Immelman a terminat cu 78, al doilea cel mai mare scor de joi, iar Chad Campbell a postat un 7-peste-par 77. Doar 24 de jucători din cei 154 prezenţi au avut scoruri sub-par în prima zi. Traseul era cel care câştiga, nu vreunul din jucători. Mathew Goggin, Eric Axley şi Ryan Moore au avut singurele scoruri de 67 (3-sub-par) în timp ce campionul en-titre a reuşit doar un 72 (2-peste-par).

Între timp, în grupul din spatele lui, Scott a avut o şansă de eagle de la 3 metri, dar a ratat şi a fost nevoit să se mulţumească cu birdie. Asta s-a întâmplat la cupa a 16-a de par 5. A salvat mai apoi par-ul la dificila cupă a 17-a de par 3, după ce prima sa lovitură s-a oprit în stânga green-ului uriaş, steagul fiind plasat departe în dreapta. Playoff-ul a început la cupa a 18-a, ambii având oportunităţi de birdie, neconcretizate însă. La a doua cupă de playoff, cupa a 17-a de par 3 unde green-ul este mărginit în partea dreaptă de apă, Scott a avut o şansă de birdie de la 4 metri, dar a ratat din nou. Prima lovitură a lui Moore s-a oprit în fringe-ul din stânga green-ului, cam pe unde se oprise mingea lui Scott mai devreme în timpul rundei, dar a reuşit să scape cu par, din 2 putt-uri.

La a treia cupă din playoff, din nou cupa a 18-a, tee-shot-ul lui Scott a ajuns în bunkerul din dreapta fairway-ului iar lovitura a doua, de approach, s-a oprit la aproximativ 16 metri de cupa. Moore şi-a dus a doua lovitură în stânga steagului, puţin în afara green-ului. Acum a urmat momentul de magie în care Scott a reuşit putt-ul de 16 metri pentru birdie, lăsând publicul cu gura căscată şi pe Moore privind fără să creadă ce vede. Acesta din urmă a avut şansa să extindă playoff-ul cu un putt din afara green-ului, dar mingea sa a trecut la câţiva centimetri în stânga cupei. Nu a fost să fie pentru Moore, care este încă în căutarea primului său succes în PGA TOUR. În timp ce Scott a obţinut a şasea victorie în tur.

One day before the EDS Byron Nelson Championship starts off in Irving, Texas, I would like to write about another past champion, a gentleman of the game of golf, a man who passed away just two years ago, but whose accomplishments in a relatively short professional career stand out to everyone.

John Byron Nelson or “Lord Byron”, as he was nicknamed after the English poet, will constitute the second chapter of this Legends of Golf series. Nelson was born in the state of Texas in 1912, to a religiously active family. He had a hard time growing up as he was struck by typhoid fever at the age of 11. He barely survived it, but recovered and started caddying at Glen Garden Country Club in Fort Worth. He knew nothing about being a caddy when he started working, but it didn’t take him long to learn. At the age of 14, he participated in a tournament for caddies, in which he beat Ben Hogan, who was a caddy at the same club at that time. The two knew each other since early childhood, but were never close friends.

Byron Nelson turned pro at the age of 20 in 1932 and waited for three years until lifting the first trophy. The tournament in which he first tasted victory was the New Jersey State Open; an open event held each year on various courses throughout New Jersey, it was a PGA TOUR event back in the ‘20s and ‘30s (Vic Ghezzi was the last famous golfer to win it in ’44 – he was a local).

He won 5 major tournaments, the first being The Masters in 1937. His first round of 66 stood as a first round scoring record at the Masters until 1976. Nelson won his first green jacket two shots in front of Ralph Guldahl (who won the Masters two years later and the U.S. Open in ’37 and ‘39). Lord Byron was 4 shots behind Guldahl after three rounds in the 4^th Masters Tournament, but managed to go birdie-eagle on the difficult 12^th and 13^th , making up six strokes over his opponent who shot 5-6 compared to his 2-3. This formidable feat was honored in 1958 by naming the bridge from the 13^th tee to the 13^th fairway, the Nelson Bridge.

His second major came in 1939. He won the only U.S. Open of his career at the Pennsylvania Country Club in Gladwyne.

Nelson won the PGA Championship when it was still a matchplay event and he did so twice by beating Sam Snead in 1940 (1 up) at the Hershey Country Club in Pennsylvania and by beating Sam Byrd in 1945 (4&3) at the Moraine Country Club in Ohio.

His other major came in 1942 at Augusta National, where he always played well after his 1937 win,(he was 5^th, 7^th, 3^rd, 2^nd in ‘38-’41 and 7^th, 2^nd, 8^th, 8^th, 4^th, 8^th in ‘46-’51 - the Masters was not held due to World War II) when he defeated Ben Hogan in an 18-hole playoff with a score of 69 to Hogan’s 70.

But Nelson is mostly remembered for his record-breaking season of 1945 when he won 11 consecutive tournaments and 18 events in total. Both records still stand. He set a record for the scoring average only recently broken by Tiger Woods and a 72-hole scoring record of 259.

Lord Byron had 53 wins on the PGA Tour, he received the PGA Tour Lifetime Achievement Award in 1997 and has been inducted into the World Golf Hall of Fame in 1974. The World Golf Hall of Fame explains: "Coming of age just as the steel shaft was replacing hickory, Nelson learned that using the big muscles in the hips and legs could be a more reliable, powerful, and effective way to hit a golf ball than the more wristy method that had been employed in the era of hickory. Nelson was particularly noteworthy for the way his swing was more upright and along the target line, employing a full shoulder turn with restricted wrist cock, and for the way he kept his knees flexed in the downswing."

He was the PGA Tour Money Winner in both 1944 and 1945 and he received the Vardon Trophy in 1939. He has a trophy named after him in the Byron Nelson Award which is given annually to the player with the lowest adjusted scoring average for the year (with a 50-round minimum).

Nelson played twice on the Ryder Cup team in 1937 and 1947 and captained it without playing in 1965.

He was the host of the EDS Byron Nelson Championship until 2006, the year that he passed away. This tournament honors his name as a great legend of the game; last year’s winner, Scott Verplank, the first winner since the “Lord” died, looked towards the skies in his memory, dedicating the victory to this man who was the finest gentleman the game has ever known.

Nelson s-a născut în statul Texas în 1912, într-o familie activă din punct de vedere religios. A avut o copilărie dificilă, fiind lovit de febră tifoidă la vârsta de 11 ani. A scăpat slăbit din această boală, dar şi-a revenit şi a început să lucreze ca şi caddy la Glen Garden Country Club în Fort Worth. A fost PGA Tour Money Winner în 1944 şi 1945 şi a primit Trofeul Vardon în 1939. Există chiar o distincţie care îi poartă numele (Byron Nelson Award) oferită anual jucătorului cu cea mai mică medie a anului (având cel puţin 50 de runde jucate).

Nelson a jucat de două ori în echipa de Ryder Cup în 1937 şi 1945 şi a fost căpitanul ei nejucător în 1965.

El a fost gazda Campionatului EDS Byron Nelson până în 2006, anul în care a trecut în nefiinţă. The Verizon Heritage is all about traditions...

Harbour Town Golf Links, the course hosting it, is all about fame... It was designed by the brilliant Pete Dye with the help of Jack Nicklaus and it constantly ranks as the number 1 course in South Carolina. It’s famous for being very short compared to modern par 71s. Its beauty encompasses everything that Hilton Head Island has to offer in terms of natural scenery.

But let’s move to the actual events of last weekend. The first round saw low scoring by one of the past champions here at the Heritage – Davis Love III – and by Justin Leonard and Lucas Glover who all shot 66 on Thursday. Stewart Cink and Camilo Villegas were 1 shot off the leaders after the first 18 holes part of a large group of players who all managed to score a round of 4-under.

Friday brought even lower scores as Boo Weekley, the defending champion, shot a 7-under 64 to follow up on his 69 from the day before. Ames, Mediate, Allenby and Glover arrived at the halfway point of the tournament with a good performance in their second round. The play of Ernie Els, Zach Johnson and Chad Campbell was disappointing as they didn’t make the cut in a tournament in which many had put the money on them. Mark Calcavecchia and Justin Rose withdrew from the Heritage after the first round.

Continuing a round of 64 with a 65 on Saturday, Weekley showed his class and his knowledge of the course. He was ranked 8^th in GIR ( Greens in Regulation ) with 65.28% and he hit 71.43% of the fairways. He was already 15-under-par for the tournament after 54 holes with only 3 bogeys made.

The closest player to Weekley was Anthony Kim, three shots off the lead, but Sunday wasn’t going to be a turn-around cause both players shot even par rounds and nobody else caught up with them, except Aaron Baddeley who tied for second with a 2-under final round.

Last year, Boo Weekley needed chip-ins on the last two holes of the last round to win the title in front of Ernie Els; this year he won it with a three shot lead, being in control all the way.

The boos that could be heard along the 18^th fairway and during all of the previous rounds were not against the player, as one might think, but were the usual cheers for Boo Weekley who got his nickname from Yogi Bear’s companion Boo Boo.

Verizon Heritage înseamnă tradiţie...

Harbour Town Golf Links, traseul care găzduieşte turneul, este faimos pentru multe lucruri... A fost desenat şi creat de marele Pete Dye cu ajutorul lui Jack Nicklaus, clasându-se în mod constant pe locul întâi în Carolina de Nord. Este vestit pentru faptul că are o lungime mult mai mică decât traseele mai noi de par 71. Frumuseţea lui reuneşte tot ce are mai frumos Insula Hilton Head în materie de peisaje şi panoramă.

Dar să trecem la ce s-a întâmplat în acest sfârşit de săptămână. Prima rundă a văzut scoruri joase din partea unui fost campion de aici de la Heritage - Davis Love III - şi din partea lui Justin Leonard şi Lucas Glover care au înregistrat toţi 66 în prima zi. Stewart Cink şi Camilo Villegas erau la o lovitură în urma liderilor după primele 18 cupe, aflându-se într-un mare grup de jucători ce încheiaseră la -4.

Ziua de vineri a adus scoruri mai joase decât prima runda, Boo Weekley, campionul en-titre, reuşind un 7-sub-par 64, după prima rundă de 2-sub-par 69. Ames, Mediate, Allenby şi Glover au ajuns la jumătatea turneului cu performanţe bune în primele zile. Contrastând cu ce au arătat aceştia, jocul lui Ernie Els, Zach Johnson şi Chad Campbell a fost dezamăgitor; ei nu au prins linia de cut într-un turneu în care mulţi pariaseră pe ei. Mark Calcavecchia şi Justin Rose s-au retras din Heritage după prima rundă.

Continuând cu un 65 sâmbătă, Weekley şi-a arătat clasa şi experienţa pe acest traseu. Era al 8-lea în Greens in Regulation cu 65,28% şi avea un procentaj de 71,43% în acurateţea drive-ului. Era deja la 15-sub-par după 54 de cupe, cu doar 3 bogey-uri făcute în trei zile.

Cel mai apropiat scor a fost cel al lui Anthony Kim, la trei lovituri în spate, dar ziua de duminică nu a adus vreo răsturnare de situaţie, ambii jucători având runde even par şi nici unul dintre urmăritori nu i-a ajuns din urmă. Doar Aaron Baddeley a reuşit o rundă de 2-sub-par cu care prins locul 2.

Anul trecut, Boo Weekley a avut nevoie de chip-ins la ultimele două cupe ale turneului pentru a câştiga înaintea lui Ernie Els; anul acesta, el a învins cu 3 lovituri avans, controlând situaţia în fiecare clipă.

"Boo"-urile ce puteau fi auzite de-a lungul fairway-ului al 18-lea cât şi pe întreg parcursul turneului nu au fost îndreptate împotriva lui, cum s-ar putea crede, ci erau încurajările uzuale pentru Boo Weekley, care şi-a primit această poreclă după prietenul ursului Yogi, Boo Boo.
