Winged Foot. 2006 U.S. Open. 72nd hole. Phil Mickelson comes to the last tee needing a par to win or a bogey to tie Geoff Ogilvy and force a playoff. But he did it again: his drive was way left and ended up near a tent past the trees. He wanted to reach the green in two (the hole was a par 4) and went for it. But his ball hit a tree and came to a stop after 25 yards. His third shot was buried in the green-side bunker and after getting it on the green, he two-putted for a double-bogey giving the U.S. Open to Geoff Ogilvy. He famously stated after the tournament: "I am such an idiot".

The first round at the Crowne Plaza Invitational saw Johnson Wagner, the winner of the Shell Houston Open in April, at the top of the leaderboard. He carded a 7-under 63, two shots better than the second-best score on Thursday. "Lefty" Mickelson and Brett Wetterich had rounds of 65 on the par 70 course at the Colonial Country Club.

Ogilvy and Kuchar moved up the standings on Friday, after rounds of 6-under each. The scoring was low on the second day and the cut line was drawn at +2, with the likes of Choi, Furyk, Sabbatini, Trahan and Stricker missing the 36-hole cut.

Saturday's moving day was positive for players like the Australian Rod Pampling (7-under 63) , the Canadian Stephen Ames (6-under 64) and the South-African Tim Clark (6-under 64). However, there were some who capsized during the third round: Steve Lowery and Johnson Wagner(both 3-over 73).

Mickelson began the final round in the last group thanks to a birdie on the 18th hole, the previous day. His playing partner, Rod Pampling had a great front nine with 4 birdies and just one bogey. Tim Clark was 2-under after the first nine holes while Mickelson was at even par for the day. The next 6 holes didn't record anything special from the front-runners except Mickelson's birdie at the 11th. So the top three players reached the 16th tee as follows: Pampling -14, Mickelson -13, Clark -11.

Tim Clark made back-to-back birdies on the par 3 16th and par 4 17th holes. Pampling made bogey on the 17th and he walked to the 72nd tee tied with his partner Mickelson. All three players were tied at -13.

He takes his driver out of the bag and rips it. His ball ended it up way left under the trees. Pampling stayed in the middle of the fairway. Clark made par and finished his tournament tied for the lead. Lefty saw his ball in the deep rough and knew he had to get to the green in regulation to have a chance at a birdie or at least a two-putt par.

His second shot with a gap wedge under a tree and over another one, the ball clipping the branches on its way up, ended up not just on the green, but nine feet from the pin.



It was the twist that Phil needed to give him a break from all the other times when he lost it on the 72nd hole. Pampling's approach was short, creeping on the front of the green and he two-putted for par. Mickelson, however, made the birdie-putt and managed to win the Crowne Plaza Invitational at Colonial, when everybody thought him dead.

He birdied the 18th hole all four days and he won the Colonial for the second time, 8 years after his first win.

Ryuji's Revenge / Răzbunarea lui Ryuji

The AT&T Classic has a history of playoff finishes in the last years and Ryuji Imada knows that too well.

In 2007, he finished tied with Zach Johnson after the 72 holes of regulation and they went into a playoff. Zach Johnson finished second here in 2006. Imada's second shot from the left fairway caught the water just before making it on the green, with a front-hole location. Zach Johnson won the playoff on that first hole of the playoff, the par 5 18th.

After one year, Imada found himself in the same position. Almost...

The first round was split in two by rain-showers which at one moment even interrupted the game. The greens were soaked and pools of water began to form, at which point the officials decided to stop play. Before the rain came, there was some low scoring on the TPC Sugarloaf course. Byrd, Palmer, Kaye, McLachlin were all tied at 6-under 66, with Kenny Perry joining them with a nice score considering his tee-time was a late one and he played his 18 holes in pouring rain. Four players were 5-under and another 10 were at 68 (4-under). Stewart Cink, the only player in the top ten of the FedEx Cup standings present there in Duluth, Georgia, was among those.

Friday's round was rain-free but the scores didn't get as low as on the previous day. Jonathan Byrd followed-up with another 66 and he was at the top of the leaderboard after 36 holes, with a three shot advantage over the men tied for second: Kenny Perry and Ryan Palmer.

The cut line was drawn at even par and the runner-up from last week, Paul Goydos was under it, at 1-over-par. So was the course designer, the great "Shark" Greg Norman, who will be featured in an upcoming chapter of the Legends of Golf series.

The third day was moving day for some and a slow day for others. Omar Uresti carded a 65 (7-under-par) and moved up to 9th place, from well down the field. Ryuji Imada moved up to 6th with a 66. Charles Howell III moved from being 4 shots behind the leader up to the top of the leaderboard after 54 holes. But that spelled trouble for him as he never managed to win when holding the lead after the third round. Byrd moved down the board with a 1-over-par round.

Sunday was full of action, exciting lead changes and with a lot of people in contention for the win, right up until the end. Camilo "The Spiderman" Villegas played some great golf and with a fabulous short game he carded a 66, at -14 for the tournament. Howell had a disappointing last round of 74, confirming the fact that he does not cope well with pressure on Sundays. Parker McLachlin had a wonderful round up until the 14th hole. He made three bogeys in his last 5 holes and finished at -12 for the tournament.

Byrd was at even par for most of the day, but earned himself some prize money with an eagle on the par 5 18th to finish at 70.

But the showdown was to be between Kenny Perry (in the last group of the day) and Ryuji Imada (in the penultimate group). With just two shots between them on Sunday morning, they battled through the course and scored some amazing putts along the back nine. Imada needed a birdie at least on the last hole to put some pressure on Perry who was one shot in front and one group back. His tee-shot ended up in the left fairway, about where he was last year, in the playoff. He took enough club and went for it, although water came into play short of the green. His approach landed in the right rough, took a bounce and settled on the green. He then two-putted for birdie as Perry was watching from the fairway. Kenny knew that birdie would win it and par would force a playoff. He layed up after his tee-shot left him well short of an attempt to reach the green in two. His third shot from about 113 yards landed about 50 feet left of the pin and he two-putted for par.

A playoff again! And Imada was in it again. One year later he found himself in the same position. Almost... Perry teed off first and he did better this time than in regulation. His 3-wood responded well and he had an opportunity to reach the green in two. Imada hit driver and his ball landed in the right rough, closer to the hole than Perry's. Perry was up first. He took a 5-wood out of the bag and ripped it. But then, something happened that nobody expected. His ball was well right of the green, it hit a tree , bounced into the fringe and then rolled down the green, gathering speed, until it plunged into the water. Perry couldn't believe his bad luck, as Imada layed up deciding to play safe. Ryuji's third shot landed on the green. Perry played his ball from the drop area and his wedge spun the ball so hard that after landing about 45 feet past the hole, it spun back past the pin to about 10 feet.

Imada missed the birdie putt but Perry did the same with his par attempt and Ryuji had just a 4 footer to win the AT&T Classic. And he did. After one year, he found himself in the same position and took advantage. He got his first win on the PGA TOUR.

AT&T Classic s-a încheiat prin playoff-uri în ultimii ani şi Ryuji Imada ştie asta prea bine.

În 2007, el a terminat la egalitate cu Zach Johnson după 72 de cupe şi s-au înfruntat într-un baraj. Zach Johnson obţinuse locul al doilea aici în 2006. A doua lovitură a lui Imada din stânga fairway-ului s-a scufundat în apă chiar înainte să prindă green-ul, cupa fiind fixată în partea din faţă. Zach Johnson a câştigat până la urmă playoff-ul la acea cupă a 18-a de par 5, prima din playoff.

După exact un an, Imada s-a aflat în aceeaşi situaţie. Aproape...

Prima rundă a fost împărţită în două de ploaia torenţială care a întrerupt jocul la un moment dat. Green-urile erau îmbibate de apă, formându-se bălţi în numeroase locuri. Astfel, organizatorii au decis să întrerupă temporar jocul. Înainte ca ploaia să înceapă, au existat scoruri joase pe traseul TPC Sugarloaf. Byrd, Palmer, Kaye, McLachlin se aflau toţi la 6-sub-par 66, iar Kenny Perry li s-a alăturat în partea a doua a zilei, cu toate că a evoluat toată runda sub ploaia deasă, având un tee-time târziu joi. Patru jucători se aflau la 5-sub-par şi încă zece la 68 (4-sub-par). Stewart Cink, singurul jucător din top 10 al clasamentului FedEx Cup prezent la Duluth, Georgia, se afla printre aceştia.

Runda de vineri a fost lipsită de precipitaţii, dar scorurile nu au mai coborât ca în prima zi. Jonathan Byrd a continuat cu un alt 66 şi se afla la conducere, după 36 de cupe, cu un avantaj de trei lovituri în faţa oamenilor de pe locul 2: Kenny Perry şi Ryan Palmer.

Linia de cut a fost trasată la even par şi ocupantul locului doi de săptămâna trecută, Paul Goydos s-a aflat sub aceasta, la 1-peste-par. Tot sub linia de calificare s-a aflat şi arhitectul traseului, marele "Rechin" Greg Norman, care va fi prezentat într-unul din capitolele următoare a seriei Legendele Golfului.

A treia zi a reprezentat ziua de avansare în clasament pentru unii şi ziua în care alţii au pierdut teren. Omar Uresti a obţinut un 65 (7-sub-par) şi a urcat până pe locul 9 de undeva din genunile clasamentului. Ryuji Imada a urcat pe locul 6 cu un 66. Charles Howell III a ajuns de la 4 lovituri în spatele liderului până în fruntea clasamentului după 54 de cupe. Dar aceasta însemna că urma să aibă probleme, dacă ne uitam la statistică: nu a reuşit niciodată să câştige după ce a condus la finalul rundei a treia. Byrd a coborât din cauza unei runde de 1-peste-par.

Duminica a fost plină de acţiune, de schimbări dese în fruntea clasamentului, mulţi jucători având şanse la victorie, chiar până în final. Camilo "Spiderman" Villegas a arătat un joc excelent şi cu un short game fabulos a încheiat la 66, -14 în întregul turneu. Howell a avut o rundă dezamăgitoare de 74, confirmând faptul că nu se descurcă sub presiune în rundele finale. Parker McLachlin a avut o rundă minunată până la cupa a 14-a. A făcut mai apoi trei bogey-uri la ultimele 5 cupe şi a terminat la -12 în turneu.

Byrd s-a aflat la even par pe parcursul întregii zile, dar a mai adunat ceva bani cu un eagle la cupa a 18-a, încheiând la 70.

Dar lupta s-a dat până la urmă între Kenny Perry (aflat în ultimul grup al zilei) şi Ryuji Imada (penultimul grup). Despărţindu-i doar două lovituri duminică dimineaţa, cei doi s-au duelat pe tot parcursul rundei, reuşind putt-uri foarte bune la ultimele 9 cupe (back nine). Imada avea nevoie cel puţin de un birdie la ultima cupă pentru a pune presiune pe Perry, care avea o lovitură avans, cu un grup în urmă. Lovitura de pe teea ajuns în stânga fairway-ului, cam pe unde se afla anul trecut în playoff. De data aceasta a luat o crosă mai mare şi a încercat din nou lovitura, deşi apa aştepta ameninţătoare înaintea green-ului. Appoach-ul lui a aterizat în dreapta green-ului, în iarba mai înaltă (rough) dar apoi a sărit pe green. Cu două putt-uri a făcut birdie, în timp ce Perry privea de pe fairway. El ştia că un birdie i-ar fi adus victoria şi că un par ar fi forţat un playoff. A ales să joace o lovitură de siguranţă, după ce lovitura de pe tee cu un 3-wood nu a fost destul de lungă pentru a-i permite să ajungă pe green din două lovituri. A treia lovitură de la aproximativ 110 metri s-a oprit la vreo 16 metri de steag şi a făcut par cu două putt-uri.

Din nou un playoff! Şi Imada participa încă o dată. Un an mai târziu se găsea în aceeaşi poziţie. Aproape... Perry a început primul de pe al 18-lea tee, de data aceasta reuşind o lovitură mai lungă cu 3-wood-ul său, care să-i permită să ajungă pe green din a doua. Imada a lovit un
driver, mingea sa ajungând în rough-ul din dreapta, mai aproape de cupă decât Perry. Acesta din urmă a scos din geantă un 5-wood şi a executat o lovitură în forţă. Dar atunci s-a întâmplat ceva la care nimeni nu se aştepta. Mingea lui a luat efect spre dreapta, a lovit un copac din mijlocul spectatorilor, a ricoşat în fringe şi apoi s-a rostogolit pe green, adunând viteză pe pantă în jos, până a plonjat în apă. Lui Perry nu-i venea să creadă ce ghinion avusese, în timp ce Imada a jucat la siguranţă. A treia lovitură a lui Ryuji a ajuns pe green. Perrz şi-a jucat mingea din zona de drop şi wedge-ul său i-a imprimat atât efect, încât mingea s-a întors de la 15 metri dincolo de cupă până la 3 metri înainte de steag.

Imada şi-a ratat putt-ul pentru birdie, dar Perry a făcut acelaşi lucru cu încercarea sa pentru par şi Ryuji mai avea doar 1 metru până la victoria în AT&T Classic. Şi a reuşit să o obţină. După un an, s-a găsit în aceeaşi situaţie şi de data aceasta a profitat. A obţinut prima sa victorie în PGA TOUR.
