PGATOUR season is underway with the
Mercedes-Benz Championship as a traditional first event. A small field of 33 players was in Hawaii for the weekend to compete on the par 73
Plantation Course in the Kapalua Resort.
The Plantation Course at Kapalua Resort, HawaiiThe field should have had 34 competitors, but with Tiger Woods missing the first part of this year's season recovering from his surgery, the lights were shining on the new guys, like Anthony Kim and Camilo Villegas.
The last American to win the Mercedes-Benz Championship was Jim Furyk in 2001. Since then, it seems the players outside the U.S. have been starting their year earlier than their American counterparts. Stuart Appleby has won 3 years in a row with Vijay Singh and Daniel Chopra being the last winners.
Geoff Ogilvy started well Thursday, carding a bogey-free 6-under par 67, the lowest round of the first day. Daniel Chopra, the defending champion, had a bad day finishing 6-over-par and dropping out of contention for his second title in Kapalua.
The second round brought some similar scoring, with the players not having to worry about missing a cut (there wasn't any): last year's winner at the Bob Hope Chrysler Classic, D.J. Trahan, posted a 66 to climb up the standings; Adam Scott managed two eagles on the day, at the 5th and the 18th.
Moving day saw Geoff Ogilvy have another fabulous round, avoiding any mistakes and not conceding any bogeys. However, it was Zach Johnson who stole the show on Saturday. Although miles away from the leader, his round of 64 was indeed something to admire: 7 birdies and an eagle.
Sunday's round was delayed by some rare showers over the island of Maui, but it got underway eventually. Geoff Ogilvy held the 54-hole lead with six shots over Justin Leonard and D.J. Trahan and looked pretty sure to win it. But he bogeyed the first two holes, then recovered with 2 birdies but suffered bogeys on the 7th and 8th. Meanwhile, Anthony Kim had 4 birdies on the front nine. The tournament looked as it were tightening at the top, but then Ogilvy dismissed any challenge by making an eagle on the par 5 9th.
From then on, it was all good for the 31 year old Australian: another five birdies catapulted him to the win in Hawaii. Anthony Kim starts his season well, tied for second with Davis Love III.
The points system in the FedExCup race has changed. The winner in a Regular Season tournament now receives only 500 points, while the second placed man gets 250 and so on. I will cover the new 2009 FedExCup points system soon.

Ziua mutărilor a văzut încă o rundă fabuloasă din partea lui Geoff Ogilvy, acesta ocolind greşelile şi scăpând încă o dată fără bogey. Totuşi, Zach Johnson a fost în centrul atenţiei sâmbătă. Deşi departe de lider, scorul său de 64 a fost ceva într-adevăr de admirat: 7 birdie-uri şi un eagle.
