The 28-year-old South-African won his first major tournament and only his second PGA TOUR tournament of his career last week at Augusta, surprising everyone with a good game.

Trevor Immelman, who previously won the Western Open in 2006 (now called the BMW Championship - part of the 4-tournament playoff for the FedEx Cup) and 4 events on the European Tour, became only the second South-African to win the Masters after Gary Player who wore the green jacket 3 times in '61, '74 and '78.

Augusta National continues the habit of bringing to the forefront players who haven't won any majors, but manage to make the Masters their first. This has happened in 6 out of the last 11 years.

One could argue that his win on the hollowed grounds of Augusta can't be tagged as a surprise cause Trevor received the PGA TOUR Rookie of the Year award in 2006 and had a 5th place here in 2005. He was tied for 6th at last year's PGA Championship. But to win the first major in a year when people ( among which many experts and pros ) believed Tiger could make the Grand Slam is a surprise.

The first round finished with a tie for the lead between two players who both shot a 4-under 68: Justin Rose and Trevor Immelman. Brandt Snedeker and Lee Westwood, among others, were one shot back while last year's winner Zach Johnson was 2 shots off the lead. Tiger shot an even par round with 15 pars, 2 consecutive bogeys followed by an eagle, while Mickelson did one better with a 71. The shot of the round belonged to Ian Poulter, who aced the par 3 16th with a superb shot:



The second round score of Steve Flesch was the lowest as he followed-up on his even par first round with a bogey-free 67. But Immelman remained in the lead with another 68 having 9 birdies and 1 bogey in the first 36 holes. "Lefty" scored a 68 as well, while Tiger slipped to seven shots behind the leader at halfway.

The cut was made at +3 and the lowest 44 scores and ties, plus those within 10 strokes of leader got to play in the weekend. Many big names missed the cut including Ernie Els and Fred Couples.

The third round at Augusta National was interrupted by a short but aggressive rain-shower, which prompted a climb up the leaderboard by Woods after a 4-under third. Although he needed a lower score or a high score from the leaders to get back in contention, it didn't happen. Immelman continued to play very well, inspired by his childhood hero Gary Player, who participated in his 50th Masters last week, who gave him a lot of advice and encouraged him to believe in his chances and talent. He was among the top players in both driving accuracy and greens in regulation, which is always a perfect combination. His score of 69 kept him at the top of the leaderboard going into Sunday.

The last round was a tough one for the players as gusts of wind influenced the scores. There were only 4 sub-par rounds on Sunday and none were from the players who had a shot at the title. Tiger Woods wasn't at his best, missing short putts on 10th, 13th, 14th and by the time he got to the 18th green he knew it was all over as he was 6 shots behind Immelman.

It was now up to Immelman to keep the calm and not self-distruct over the last several of holes. Immelman had a lot of luck the previous round when his third shot on the par 5 15th spinned off the green, in what will be remembered as one of the most important moments in the 2008 Masters:



When his shot on the par 3 16th ended up in the water, people were starting to wonder if another blunder like that couldn't open up the Masters for a playoff with Tiger who birdied the 18th or even with Brandt Snedeker, Immelman's playing partner for the last two rounds.

But Immelman kept his cool and finished par-par on the last two holes to win it from Tiger who was three shots behind.

Zach Johnson put the Green Jacket on Trevor Immelman's shoulders in the cabin and so, another Masters at the azalea- and crowd-filled Augusta National GC finished.

Sud-Africanul de 28 de ani a câştigat primul lui turneu major şi doar al doilea turneu de PGA Tour din carieră în această săptămână la Augusta, surprinzând pe toată lumea cu un joc excelent.

Trevor Immelman, care a câştigat în trecut Open-ul Western în 2006 (numit acum Campionatul BMW - face parte din playoff-ul de 4 turnee al FedEx Cup) şi 4 competiţii în European Tour, a devenit doar al doilea sud-african care a câştigat Masters-ul după marele Gary Player care a îmbrăcat jacheta verde în '61, '74 şi '78.

Augusta National continuă obiceiul de a aduce în faţă jucători care nu au câştigat nici un turneu major, dar care reuşesc să învingă la Masters pentru prima dată. Acest lucru s-a întâmplat de 6 ori în ultimii 11 ani.

Immelman a continuat să joace un golf frumos, lovituri echilibrate, constant bune, inspirat fiind şi de eroul copilăriei sale, Gary Player, care a participat în cel de-al 50-lea Masters al său, care i-a dat numeroase sfaturi şi l-a încurajat să creadă în şansele şi talentul său. Astfel, Trevor s-a aflat printre primii atât în acurateţea drive-ului cât şi în green-uri lovite în regulation, o combinaţie excelentă pe orice traseu. Scorul său de 69 l-a păstrat tot în fruntea clasamentului în noaptea de sâmbătă spre duminică.

Ultima rundă a fost extrem de dificilă pentru jucători, scorurile înregistrate de ei fiind influenţate în mare măsură de rafalele de vânt ce au măturat traseul. Au existat doar 4 runde sub-par duminică şi nici una nu a fost reuşită de vreun jucător ce avea şanse la titlu. Tiger Woods nu s-a aflat în cea mai bună formă, ratând putt-uri scurte la cupa 10, 13, 14 şi pe când a ajuns la ultima cupă şi-a dat seama că totul era încheiat, fiind la 6 lovituri în spatele lui Immelman.

Totul depindea acum doar de Trevor, trebuind doar să-şi păstreze calmul şi să nu se autodistrugă pe parcursul ultimelor câteva cupe. Immelman avusese foarte mult noroc în runda precedentă când a treia lovitură la cupa 15 par 5, s-a rostogolit de pe green, într-un moment care va fi probabil ţinut minte drept cel mai important la Masters-ul din 2008 :



Când lovitura sa la cupa 16 par 3 a ajuns în apă, spectatorii se întrebau dacă încă o greşeală de acest gen nu ar deschide drumul către un playoff cu Tiger, care tocmai făcuse birdie la ultima cupă sau chiar cu Brandt Snedeker, partenerul de joc al lui Immelman din ultimele două zile.

Dar Immelman şi-a păstrat calmul şi a încheiat cu par-par la ultimele două cupe, câştigând astfel cu un avans de 3 lovituri în faţa lui Tiger Woods.

Zach Johnson l-a îmbrăcat pe Trevor Immelman cu jacheta verde a învingătorului şi astfel un alt Masters la frumosul Augusta National GC a luat sfârşit.
