FBR Open vs. Super Bowl / Open-ul FBR vs. Super Bowl

2008. 31^st January – 5^th February. USA. All hell breaks loose: the loudest golf tournament and loudest single hole in golf at the FBR Open in TPC Scottsdale; the most important US sporting event of the year, the Super Bowl; the deciding day of the primary elections, the “Super Duper Tuesday”.The last one extending over 24 states, with primaries and caucuses on every corner.The first two, just a couple of miles away from each-other, as the state of Arizona prepares for a very “hot” weekend, hosting these two big sporting events.

While all three are important, I will only talk about the sporting side of this period.Even though I will focus on the FBR Open in this preview, the Super Bowl deserves some words too.

The New York Giants will face the New England Patriots in a clash of two very different teams.The Patriots are considered favorites to finish with a perfect season, the first since the 1972 Miami Dolphins and the first one since NFL expanded the league to a 16-game regular season in 1978.However, the Giants have caused at least 5 upsets in their last 10 consecutive victories and they nearly beat the Patriots in the last game of the regular season, with the Patriots managing a rally in the 4^th quarter to win 38-35.We’ll see what happens...

The FBR Open at TPC Scottsdale will be a venue at which over 500 000 spectators will pour onto the course, many of which will roar in the “Amphitheatre” surrounding the loudest hole in golf, the par 3 16^th.

This hole has witnessed some of the loudest cheers in golf, as people go wild after a good shot or boo the golfers after a poor shot, at a hole which is fairly easy according to PGA standards.Tiger made a hole-in-one there, in 1997 and people celebrated like on new year’s.Justin Leonard showed people the finger after getting booed for a poor shot.The entertainment is guaranteed.

The field will be strong, with the likes of Phil Mickelson (local favorite), last year’s winner Aaron Baddeley, Vijay Singh, Mark Calcavecchia, Jeff Quinney and many more present on the par 72 course.Here is the listing of the entire field.My guess would be Phil Mickelson as the winner,he has shown a good form in the last 2 rounds at the Buick Invitational, recovering from his breathing problems.

On Thursday, the first round starts at 14:40 GMT ( 7:40 Phoenix local time ), 16:40 in Romania.

O perioadă extrem de agitată: cel mai zgomotos turneu de golf şi cea mai zgomotoasă cupă din aces sport, la Open-ul FBR de la TPC Scottsdale; cel mai important eveniment sportiv al anului pentru americani, Super Bowl-ul; ziua decisivă a alegerilor primare, aşa-numita “Super Duper Marţi”. Ultima dintre acestea se întinde în 24 de state, cu alegeri primare şi caucasuri la fiecare colţ al naţiunii. Primele două, doar la câţiva kilometri distanţă una de alta, statul Arizona pregătindu-se de un sfârşit de săptămână foarte fierbinte, fiind gazda acestor două evenimente sportive.

În timp ce toate cele trei sunt importante, nu voi vorbi decât despre partea sportivă a acestei perioade. Deşi mă voi concentra asupra Open-ului FBR în acest preambul, Super Bowl-ul merită şi el câteva cuvinte.

Această cupă a fost martora celor mai mari urale din golf; oamenii, dintre care mulţi studenţi de la Universitatea de Stat din Arizona, se manifestă gălăgios după fiecare lovitură, încurajând jucătorii după o lovitură bună , dar şi huiduindu-i după una nereuşită, la această cupă destul de uşoară după standardele PGA.Tiger Woods a reuşit un as (hole-in-one) aici în 1997, iar spectatorii au intrat într-o frenezie de nedescris.Justin Leonard le-a arătat oamenilor degetul în acelaşi an, după ce a fost huiduit pentru o lovitură ratată. Divertismentul nu va lipsi.

“Whoever bet against Tiger Woods winning this particular tournament hasn’t watched golf in the past 12 years...” said one of the hosts of the PGA TOUR Network on XM 146. And he was right.

Tiger won the last 3 Buick Invitationals before this weekend and was the favorite to do so again.The tournament this year was special, because the South Course at Torrey Pines will also host the US OPEN in June; so, many players who usually don’t show up for this event, were here to check out the course on which 3 rounds of the 4 were played.Each player got to tee up on the South Course and on the North Course, in the first two rounds and those who made the cut played two more rounds on the South Course.

The playing conditions were very good throughout the competition and low scores were seen from Thursday until Saturday, even on the much tougher South Course.

-The first round brought Troy Matteson into the lead with a 7 under 65, with two rookies in the top 3: Brad Adamonis and Kevin Streelman making a good impression on the crowds in San Diego.

-The second and third rounds were all about Tiger Woods as he cruised into an 8 shot lead ahead before Sunday with a 65 on the North Course and a 66 on Friday. The long awaited duel between Phil Mickelson and Tiger was also postponed for another tournament (maybe the Masters) because of Phil’s disappointing second round of 1 over 73 probably related to his breathing problems earlier in the week.

-The final round on Sunday was much tougher with forecasts predicting showers and winds increasing in speed over the day.But despite the low number of under par rounds, the people got their money’s worth as Ryuji Imada who finished second for the tournament made some incredible birdie putts from well over 40 feet, Rory Sabbatini, who finished tied for third with Stewart cink, also collected some loud roars from the crowds with an eagle on the 72^nd hole of the tournament.But the shot of the round was made by who other than Tiger Woods who sank an improbable 60 foot birdie putt on 11th.It’s not the first time he has made those.The green had a good slope towards the hole so he put it way right of it and as it lost speed, it changed direction and went down the slope in the hole, with a 90 degree angle with the previous direction.The people went wild. That was a real PGA TOUR moment.

Seven people finished the fourth round under par on Sunday and Phil Mickelson was one of them as he regained some form to come out tied for 6^th , 13 behind the winner.

“Oricine a pariat împotriva lui Tiger Woods în câştigarea acestui turneu, nu s-a uitat la golf în ultimii 12 ani...” a spus unul din gazdele transmisiunii PGA TOUR Network pe postul de radio XM 146. Şi avea dreptate.

Tiger a învins în ultimele trei competiţii Buick Invitational înaintea acestui sfârşit de săptămână şi era favorit să mai adauge o victorie la palmares.Turneul din acest an a fost unul special, deoarece traseul de sud de la Torrey Pines va găzdui şi US Open-ul din iunie; astfel, mulţi jucători care de obicei nu se prezintă la acest eveniment, au fost aici pentru a se obişnui cu traseul pe care au fost ţinute 3 din cele 4 runde.Fiecare jucător a evoluat pe traseul de sud si pe cel de nord în primele două runde, iar cei care s-au calificat mai departe au jucat doar pe cel sudic.

Condiţiile de concurs au fost foarte bune aproape pe tot parcursul turneului, fiind realizate scoruri mici de joi până sâmbătă, chiar şi pe traseul de sud cel mai dificil dintre cele două.

-Prima rundă l-a adus pe Troy Matteson la conducere cu un scor de 7 sub par (65) şi doi nou-veniţi în PGA TOUR: Brad Adamonis şi Kevin Streelman lăsând o impresie foarte bună spectatorilor din San Diego.

-A doua şi a treia rundă au fost dominate de Tiger Woods care a clădit un avans de 8 lovituri înaintea zilei de duminică cu un scor de -7 (65) pe traseul de nord şi -6 (66) vineri. Mult aşteptatul duel între Phil Mickelson şi Tiger a fost amânat pentru un alt turneu (poate la Masters-ul din aprilie), din cauza unei runde a doua dezamăgitoare de 1 peste par (73) datorată probabil problemelor de respiraţie avute spre începutul săptămânii.

-Runda finală s-a dovedit a fi mult mai grea pentru concurenţi, cu previziuni meteorologice sumbre şi o briză puternică din larg. Cu toate că numărul rundelor sub par a fost simţitor mai mic decât în zilele precedente, spectatorii au avut ce vedea, căci Ryuji Imada, care a terminat turneul pe locul 2, a reuşit câteva putt-uri extraordinare de la peste 15 metri; Rory Sabbatini, care a încheiat la egalitate pe locul 3 cu Stewart Cink, a adunat şi el ovaţii puternice după un eagle la cupa a 72-a a turneului. Dar lovitura zilei a fost reuşită de cine altul decât Tiger Woods, care a scufundat mingea în cupă după un neverosimil putt de la 20 de metri pentru birdie, la cupa a 11-a. Nu e prima dată când reuşeşte o astfel de lovitură. Green-ul avea o pantă pronunţată, aşa că a lovit mingea mult spre dreapta iar aceasta, de îndată ce a pierdut din viteză, şi-a schimbat deirecţia, coborând panta green-ului până în cupă, la un unghi de 90 de grade faţă de direcţia iniţială. Oamenii erau în delir.A fost un adevărat moment de PGA TOUR.

Şapte jucători au încheiat sub par duminică şi Phil Mickelson a fost unul dintre aceştia, terminând cu o revenire de formă la egalitate pe locul 6, la 13 lovituri distanţă de învingător.

Golf-ro gets underway / Golf-ro a luat startul

After giving it some thought, I have decided to start this blog about the world of golf, with the hope that I can maintain it up-to-date and that people will enjoy it.

I am from Romania, where golf isn't the most known sport but where things are slowly but steadily evolving with new courses being built and people starting to take interest in it.

I wish to publish this blog in both Romanian and English, so every post will be written in both of these languages.Both versions will have the same content, in general, with slight adaptations to suit the Romanian and the Foreign readers respectively.The reason for this is that I wanted to write it in Romanian at first, but then I decided to not restrict my readers to those who know the Romanian language.

This blog will contain Monday morning recaps of the PGA TOUR tournaments, informations about tournaments in Romania, articles about past and present golfers, about golf history (greatest moments in golf) as well as the latest news and statistics from the world of golf.
Comments are always welcome as long as they are decent and to-the-point.Suggestions as well.
I hope you will enjoy this - sometimes subjective, mostly objective - view inside the world of the sport of which someone said: " Golf can best be defined as an endless series of tragedies obscured by the occasional miracle."

După o perioadă de indecizie, am hotărât să încep acest blog despre lumea golfului, cu speranţa că îl voi putea menţine cât mai actual şi că oamenii îl vor aprecia.

Sunt din România, unde golful nu este cel mai cunoscut sport, dar unde lucrurile evoluează încet dar sigur odată cu construirea unor noi trasee şi cu interesul crescând al oamenilor.

Doresc să scriu acest blog atât în română, cât şi în engleză, deci fiecare articol va fi scris în ambele limbi.Variantele vor avea în general acelaşi conţinut, poate întrucâtva adaptat cititorilor români, respectiv străini.Motivul pentru această publicare bilingvă se află în dorinţa mea de a publica un blog în limba română, dar şi cea de a nu restricţiona citirea acestuia la cei ce cunosc limba română.

Acest blog va conţine rezumate de luni dimineaţa ale turneelor din PGA TOUR, informaţii despre competiţiile interne, articole despre foşti şi actuali golferi, despre momente mari ale acestui sport, cât şi ultimele ştiri şi statistici din lumea golfului.

Comentariile sunt întotdeauna binevenite, cât timp sunt decente şi la subiect.Sugestiile de asemenea.

Sper să vă facă plăcere această – uneori subiectivă, de cele mai multe ori obiectivă - privire înăuntrul unui sport despre care cineva odată spunea : “Golful poate fi uneori definit ca o serie nesfârşită de tragedii, eclipsate de un miracol ocazional.”
