The Memorial Tournament presented by Morgan Stanley is closely tied to Jack Nicklaus. As you get to the 18th green on Sunday, you'll surely see him there, waiting, reminiscing, eager to hand over the trophy to the player with the lowest score. Many players remember the moment when they shook his hand and keep it as a precious, unforgettable memory.

This week, Jack was there waiting again.

The par 72 Muirfield Village Golf Course welcomed the competitors on Thursday with some moderately low scoring. The best score from the first round belonged to Mathew Goggin who shot a 7-under 65. Kenny Perry and Jerry Kelly carded 66s while Boo Weekley had a disappointing 76.

The second round played much harder than the first as people struggled to make the cut at +6. Johnson Wagner held the lowest score of the round at 67, with just Daniel Chopra and J.B. Holmes having two other under-70 rounds.

Saturday's round saw some players catch up with the leaders: Mike Weir had a 68 and moved up to second place, the Englishman Justin Rose had a 2-under 70 round and tied for second as well. Jerry Kelly and Kenny Perry had scores of 73 and 74 but remained close behind the 54-hole leader Mathew Goggin. He was at -8 for the tournament after the first three rounds.

The last round saw Goggin disintegrating, being at +3 for the day at one point. He birdied the 18th hole and managed to finish tied for 2nd place. But Kenny Perry continued his run of great tournaments and had 4 birdies and just one bogey on the last day, to finish at -8 alone at the top, two shots ahead of everyone else. His third win at the Memorial was impressive but expected, since he was constantly in the hunt for a win in the previous weeks. The victory avoided him, but no more. The score was the highest at Memorial in the last 23 years.

Kenny Perry climbed up to 4th in the FedEx Cup standings and is in a top position for a U.S. Ryder Cup team draft, which is what the 47-year-old veteran wants most. A spot on the team this fall would be invaluable for him, as he stated many times and team captain Paul Azinger said that one must have at least a win to make the team. The Ryder Cup will be held at Valhalla in his home state of Kentucky.

Turneul Memorial prezentat de Morgan Stanley se află într-o strânsă legătură cu marele Jack Nicklaus. Când ajungi la al 18-lea green, duminică, îl vei vedea cu siguranţă acolo, aşteptând, amintindu-şi poate de vremea când participa şi el, dar şi nerăbdător să înmâneze trofeul jucătorului cu cel mai bun scor. Mulţi jucători îşi amintesc momentul în care i-au strâns mâna şi îl păstrează ca pe o amintire preţioasă, de neuitat.

În această săptămână, Jack aştepta din nou.

Traseul de par 72 de la Muirfield Village Golf Course i-a întâmpinat joi pe competitori cu scorori relativ joase. Cea mai bună rundă i-a aparţinut lui Mathew Goggin, cu un 65 (7-sub-par). Kenny Perry şi Jerry Kelly au înregistrat scoruri de 66, în timp ce Boo Weekley doar un dezamăgitor 76.

Ultima zi a însemnat dezintegrarea lui Mathew Goggin, aflându-se la 3-peste-par la un moment dat în timpul zilei. Totuşi cu un birdie la ultima cupă, el a reuşit să prindă locul 2. Dar Kenny Perry şi-a continuat jocul bun şi cu 4 birdie-uri şi un singur bogey în ultima zi, a încheiat pe primul loc, la -8 pentru turneu, cu două lovituri înaintea tuturor celorlalţi competitori. A treia sa victorie la Memorial a fost impresionantă, dar aşteptată din moment ce el se clasase în mod constant în primele locuri pe parcursul ultimelor săptămâni. Victoria îl ocolise, dar ghinionul i s-a terminat. Scorul cu care a câştigat a fost cel mai ridicat la Memorial în ultimii 23 de ani.
