FBR Holmes / FBR-ul lui Holmes

The FBR Open is over. The Super Bowl is over. Super Tuesday is over. But it was a weekend well worth remembering. J.B. Holmes, a former winner here at the TPC in Scottsdale in 2006 (his only victory on the PGA Tour), battled it out with local favorite Phil Mickelson.

Going into the final round with a 4 shot lead in front of a pack of players, J.B. Holmes started pretty good going to 2 under for the day through 5 holes, but then seemed to loose his calm with 3 bogeys in 4 holes, to go to 1 over for the day, just as Phil Mickelson, three groups in front of him, was birdying the 13^th and 15^th. Phil had two chances for eagle but missed very long putts and had to settle for birdie on both.

Phil birdied his 17^th to finish 4 under par for the day, 14 under for the tournament and waited in the clubhouse for the arrival of J.B. Holmes and Charles Warren who was also in contention for the win. Meanwhile, the two were on the 15^th and both sank their shots in the water, near the peninsula green. They had medium distance putts for par, but both missed to settle for bogey.

At this moment, Phil Mickelson had a one shot lead, from the chairs of the clubhouse, with three holes to play for the leaders from the Saturday. Everything stayed the same through the next two holes, with J.B. Holmes needing a birdie on the last to tie Phil and force a playoff. Holmes teed off with a huge drive over the water and a bunker, to land it near the crowd, left of the fairway, behind a fence. When he got there, he asked for official ruling and he got relief from that position, as the fence was a temporary immovable obstruction. He dropped his ball inside two club length and had a fairly good lie in the rough. The tension was almost unbearable when J.B. Holmes walked it off to the green to check out the slopes, before this crucial shot from the left side rough. He then pounded it out with earth and grass in the air, but managed to get it onto the green to about 13 feet of the hole. He then one-putted for birdie to force a playoff.

The playoff started with the 18^th hole once more. Phil picked the smaller number so he had to tee off first. His drive split the fairway but was surpassed by Holmes’s by far, as he drove his shot over the water and the fairway bunker, for a splendid 359 yards. Phil’s approach shot creeped onto the green but he had a 28-footer for birdie. Holmes brought it closer to 8 feet and the end was nearing. Phil missed his shot left and Holmes again one-putted for birdie, to win the FBR Open for the second time.

Phil was clearly disappointed but then said he was feeling good and that he had the win in his hands with the two eagle opportunities earlier in the day. He’s now looking forward for this weekend’s AT&T Pebble Beach National Pro-Am where he is the favorite yet again.

“I can play under pressure, I guess” said J.B. Holmes after his impressive last two holes at the TPC Scottsdale.

The disappointments of the tournament were Vijay Singh and Aaron Baddeley who didn’t even make Saturday’s cut.

Începând runda finală cu 4 lovituri avans înaintea unui grup destul de mare de jucători, J.B. Holmes a trecut cu bine de primele 5 cupe, ajungând la 2 sub par în acea zi, dar apoi a părut să-şi piardă calmul cu 3 bogey-uri în 4 cupe, pentru a trece la 1 peste par.Şi aceasta, tocmai când Phil Mickelson, cu tre grupuri înaintea lui Holmes, reuşea birdie-uri la cupele 13 şi 15, având chiar şanse de eagle la fiecare.

Phil a reuşit încă un birdie la cupa 17 pentru a termina la 4 sub par în runda finală, 14 sub par pentru turneu şi aştepta în clubhouse sosirea lui Holmes şi a lui Charles Warren, care înca păstra şi el şanse la victorie. Între timp, cei doi erau la cupa 15 şi ambii şi-au scufundat mingile în apa ce străjuia green-ul peninsulă.Ei au avut putt-uri de distanţă medie, dar au ratat şi s-au mulţumit cu bogey.

Holmes a început de pe tee cu un drive imens peste apă şi un bunker, mingea aterizând lângă spectatori, în stânga fairway-ului, în spatele unui gard.Când a ajuns acolo, a cerut decizia unui oficial al turneului şi a primit un ajutor (relief) până în 2 lungimi de crosă din acel loc, gardul fiind considerat o obstrucţie temporar imobilă.El şi-a lăsat mingea să cadă, nimerind un loc destul de bun în iarba deasă.Tensiunea a devenit insuportabilă în momentul în care Holmes a mers până la green şi înapoi pentru a evalua situaţia, înainte de această lovitură crucială din iarba deasă din stânga fairway-ului.Apoi a lovit cu putere, pământ şi iarbă sărind prin aer, dar a reuşit să-şi poziţioneze mingea pentru birdie, la doar 4 metri, pe green.A reuşit birdie-ul cu un putt pentru a forţa un playoff.

Playoff-ul a început tot cu cupa a 18-a.Phil a tras un numar mai mic şi a trebuit să înceapă primul.Drive-ul lui s-a oprit în mijlocul fairway-ului, dar a fost depăşit cu mult de drive-ul de 360 de metri a lui J.B.. Lovitura a doua a lui Mickelson s-a strecurat cu greu pe green, oprindu-se la 10 metri de cupă.Holmes a trimis mingea lui până la 2.50 metri şi sfârşitul era aproape.Phil a ratat încercarea lui pentru birdie şi Holmes a ieşit învingător cu un putt destul de uşor de scufundat, devenind astfel campion la Open-ul FBR pentru a doua oară în trei ani.

Phil a fost vizibil dezamăgit de acest loc doi, dar a declarat mai apoi că se simte bine şi că a avut victoria în mâinile sale cand a avut două încercări pentru eagle mai devreme.El aşteaptă acum turneul AT&T Pebble Beach National Pro-Am din weekend-ul acesta, unde este favorit la victorie,fiind şi actualul deţinător al trofeului.

Dezamăgirile turneului au fost Vijay Singh şi Aaron baddeley care nu au reuşit să treacă de cut, pentru a juca în rundele finale.
