The Blue Monster at Doral challenges the players to give everything they have not only to beat each other, but to beat a very difficult golf course, famous for its water-guarded holes and its finishing par 4, which is no doubt, the hardest finishing hole on the PGA TOUR.

With this in mind, a very strong field came to the Doral Golf Resort & Spa, yearning for the very tempting prize money that a WGC event offers (1.350.000 USD for the winner) and for those ever-precious FedEx Cup points (4725 points for the winner, more than for a normal event; for more info see here) with the likes of Tiger Woods defending champion from 2007, Vijay Singh, Zach Johnson, Adam Scott, Jim Furyk, K.J. Choi, Phil Mickelson and many others present and hoping to end Tiger’s invincibility.

The tournament is a normal stroke-play event, unlike the Accenture Championship, but with a field of about 70 players, it has no 36-hole cut. Everybody would play all 72 holes.

After the first two rounds, Geoff Ogilvy, the 2006 US Open winner, was leading the field with a 65 and a 67 carded Thursday and Friday. Woods was one shot back at -11. The third round brought other players into contention with low rounds from Singh (63), Furyk (64), Goosen (64) and Graeme Storm (63) but spelled disaster for Woods as he struggled to an even par 72 to drop to 5 shots behind the leader Ogilvy who managed a 4 under round in a third round which extended from Saturday to Sunday due to bad weather.

The final round was played Sunday afternoon, but was suspended because of darkness and had to be continued for an extra day on Monday.

Ogilvy succeeded in holding off the challenges by the best golfers of the world on Monday, as he was 2 shots in front with 8 holes to play. He made a fabulous birdie at the 13^th with a chip that hit the flagstick and held on to a 1 under par round and a tournament with just one single bogey.

Steve Stricker had the lowest score (63) in the fourth round as he creeped in to tie for sixth place. Woods finished alone in fifth and Singh, Furyk and Goosen finished tied for second, one shot off the winner.

Traseul Blue Monster de la Doral îi face pe jucători să dea tot ce au
mai bun, nu doar pentru a se lupta între ei, ci şi pentru a învinge acest traseu foarte dificil, faimos pentru cupele sale păzite de apă şi pentru cupa a 18-a, un par 4 ce reprezintă cea mai grea cupă finală din PGA Tour.

Având în vedere toate acestea, o mulţime de jucători puternici au venit la Doral Golf Resort & Spa, visând la premiul în bani foarte tentant oferit la fiecare turneu WGC (1.350.000 USD pentru câştigător) şi la acele puncte preţioase din clasamentul FedEx Cup (4725 de puncte pentru învingător, mai multe decât la un turneu obişnuit; pentru mai multe informaţii despre acestea, vezi aici), printre aceştia aflându-se Tiger Woods, câştigătorul din 2007 venit să-şi apere titlul, Vijay Singh, Zach Johnson, Adam Scott, Jim Furyk, KJ Choi, Phil Mickelson şi mulţi alţii prezenţi cu speranţa de a încheia invincibilitatea lui Tiger.

Turneul este de tipul stroke-play, spre deosebire de Campionatul Accenture care a fost un eveniment disputat în maniera match-play. Fiind prezenţi doar aproximativ 70 de jucători, nu există linie de "cut" după primele 2 runde. Toată lumea joacă 72 de cupe.

După primele 36 de cupe, Geoff Ogilvy, câştigătorul US Open-ului din 2006, conducea plutonul cu scoruri de 65 şi 67 obţinute joi şi vineri. Woods se afla la o lovitură în spate, la -11. A treia rundă a adus şi alţi golferi către fruntea clasamentului cu o şansă bună la titlu, după ce au reuşit scoruri joase: Singh (63), Furyk (64), Goosen (64) şi Graeme Storm (63), dar a însemnat şi o cădere în clasament a lui Woods, după a rundă mai puţin reuşită în care s-a chinuit să obţină un even par 72, fiind la 5 lovituri în urma liderului care a coborât la -4 în această a treia rundă ce s-a întins de sâmbătă până duminică din cauza vremii inclemente.

Runda finală a fost disputată duminică după-masă, dar a fost suspendată din cauza întunericului şi a trebuit continuată luni dimineaţa.

Ogilvy a reuşit să reziste asaltului final a celor mai buni din lume, având un avantaj de 2 lovituri când mai erau de jucat încă 8 cupe. L-a ajutat şi un birdie fabulos la cupa a 13-a cu un chip care a lovit steagul înainte de a cădea în cupă şi a terminat cu o rundă de 1 sub par şi un turneu în care a avut doar un singur bogey.

Steve Stricker a postat cel mai mic scor în a patra rundă (63) şi s-a furişat pe locul 6. Woods a terminat singur pe locul 5, iar Singh, Furyk şi Goosen au încheiat la egalitate pe locul 2, la o lovitură de învingător.

And was there any doubt...?

Tiger began the tournament with an even par 70, 5 shots behind the first round leaders, but was there any doubt...?

He was missing putts all-over the place and this continued all through the second round, when he shot a two-under 68 to make the cut 7 shots behind the halfway leaders, but was there any doubt...?

He carded a four-under 66 on Saturday to have a share of the lead. He already had a record of 42-3 when holding the lead after 3 rounds going into this tournament and was there any doubt...?

Woods was still tied for the lead with Bart Bryant when teeing off the 18^th, with Bryant making par in the group ahead and finishing with a 67, at 9 under for the tournament, but was there any doubt...?

He played his tee shot into the fairway, then played an aggressive approach to the green on this treacherous hole, guarded by water all across the right side, with rocks coming into play if the approach was either short or rightish. He brought it to about 24 feet of the pin, with a shot that was according to him “his best of the week”. He had that 24-footer for birdie to avoid a play-off with a clubhouse-resting Bart Bryant and to win the Arnold Palmer Invitational for the 5^th time. And was there any doubt...? He lined it up, a couple of practice swings, putter behind the ball, back and through, left to right break, slowing down but trickling in...

With the 64^th win on the PGA TOUR, Tiger ties Ben Hogan for an all-time third place in number of victories. Could be 65, this week at the World Golf Championships CA Championship, where he defends the title from 2007.

But the question remains: was there any doubt... in his mind that he could win it? Judging from his reaction as the final putt went in, as you can see in the video above, his cap thrown to the ground, a tension build-up releasing through a roar, his eyes full of emotions as he watched his playing partner from the last round, Sean O’Hair, making his putt to finish tied for third, I would say yes, there was. Those are the gestures of someone who started badly, who was nearly out of contention, who had doubts of ending his victory-streak on a sunny afternoon in Orlando, but who despite these doubts never lost hope, who rallied and managed to, if not surprise, then to stun everyone who believed in him with another jaw-dropping performance. It’s a lesson to be learned, for doubt in oneself must never defeat hope in ones abilities and strength.

Tiger şi-a început turneul cu un even par 70, 5 lovituri în spatele liderilor primei runde, dar a existat oare vreun dubiu...?

Rata putt-uri încoace şi-ncolo, continuând aşa şi de-a lungul întregii runde a doua, când a reuşit un scor de 2 sub par 68 pentru a rămâne deasupra cut-ului, la 7 lovituri în spatele liderilor la jumătatea turneului, dar a existat oare vreun dubiu...?

A înregistrat un scor de 4 sub par 66 sâmbătă, preluând conducerea la egalitate cu alţi 4 jucători. Woods avea deja un record înainte de acest turneu, impunându-se de 42 de ori din 45 când conducea după 3 runde şi a existat oare vreun dubiu...?

Woods era încă la egalitate cu Bart Bryant când a ajuns pe tee-ul celei de-a 18-a cupe, Bryant reuşind un par în grupul din faţă şi încheiând cu un 67, la 9 sub par pentru turneu, dar a existat oare vreun dubiu...?

A jucat lovitura de pe tee până pe fairway, apoi a dat o lovitură agresivă către green, la această cupă periculoasă, păzită de apă pe toată partea sa dreaptă, pietre dând bătăi de cap oricărui jucător care îşi lăsa a doua lovitură prea scurtă sau prea înspre dreapta. Tiger şi-a dus mingea până la aproximativ 8 metri de steag, după o lovitură care conform spuselor lui a fost “cea mai bună a săptămânii pentru el”. Îi mai rămăseseră doar 8 metri pentru birdie, pentru a evita un play-off cu Bart Bryant care se odihnea deja în clubhouse şi a câştiga Arnold Palmer Invitational pentru a cincea oară. Şi a existat oare vreun dubiu...? Şi-a aliniat putt-ul, câteva lovituri de antrenament, putter-ul în spatele mingii, pendularea înapoi şi înainte, mingea a pornit, prinzând o pantă care i-a modificat traiectoria de la stânga la dreapta, încetinind dar strecurându-se în cupă...

Cu cea de-a 64-a victorie în PGA TOUR, Tiger l-a egalat pe Ben Hogan (care va urma şi el în seria LEGENDELE GOLFULUI) în clasamentul numărului total de victorii în tur. Ar putea deveni 65, săptămâna viitoare la World Golf Championships CA Championship, unde îşi va apăra titlul din 2007.

Dar întrebarea rămâne: a existat oare vreun dubiu... în mintea sa că ar putea să nu câştige? Judecând după reacţia sa în timp ce ultimul putt a intrat în cupă, după cum puteţi vedea în clipul de mai sus, când şi-a aruncat şi cap-ul pe jos, eliberându-se de tensiunea acumulată printr-un răget, cu ochii plini de emoţie în timp ce îl privea pe partenerul său de joc din ultima rundă, Sean O’Hair reşind putt-ul pentru a termina la egalitate pe locul 3, aş spune că da, a existat. Acelea sunt gesturile unei persoane care a început prost, care era aproape în afara turneului, care se temea că şirul său de victorii consecutive va lua sfârşit într-o după-masă însorită la Orlando, dar care în ciuda acestor temeri şi dubii nu şi-a pierdut speranţa, care şi-a revenit şi a reuşit, dacă nu să surprindă, atunci să lase cu gura căscată pe toţi, chiar şi pe cei ce credeau în el, cu încă o evoluţie formidabilă. E o lecţie de învăţat aici, căci neîncrederea în sine nu trebuie să învingă niciodată speranţa în abilităţi şi putere.

Legends of Golf - Arnold Palmer / Legendele Golfului - Arnold Palmer

As the Arnold Palmer Invitational brings together the best players in the world at Bay Hill Club & Lodge this week, it’s time for me to start a series of articles under the name “Legends of Golf”, which will present some of the best players in the history of this sport, their achievements and interesting facts about them.

So the first chapter in this series is going to be about Arnold Palmer, “The King” or Arnie as people liked to call him. Palmer was born in 1929 in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania as the son of a greens keeper at the modest Latrobe Country Club. He helped his father at work and got to learn what golf was about. Soon enough, his talent became obvious as he carded his first under 70 round at the age of 7.

He attended Wake Forest University, North Carolina on a golf scholarship but left before graduation to serve 3 years in the Coast Guard, recovering from the death of a close friend. His first great win came in 1954, when he won the U.S. Amateur Championship (a match play type of event) at the Country Club of Detroit 1 up against Robert Sweeny Jr., which represented his springboard to professional golf.

He turned pro a few months later and took the Canadian Open as his first win on the PGA TOUR in 1955. After another 7 wins in the next 3 years, he won his first major, the Masters of 1958. He would then go on to win the Masters in ‘60, ‘62 and ‘64. These years were the best of his career with 29 wins across a span of just 4 years. Among these victories were a U.S. Open title in 1960 and two Open Championship titles in 1961 and 1962. Palmer went to play across the “Pond” at a time when US players didn’t and by this assured the status of the Open Championship among the 4 Majors. Back then, US players didn’t bother to travel that far to play in a competition with small purse, dominated by the Europeans and played on link courses so different from what they were used to.

Arnold Palmer won at least one event each year in the PGA TOUR until 1971 and won his last competition on the tour in 1973 at the Bob Hope Desert Classic. After that he participated in the Senior PGA Tour (now called The Champions Tour) and had 10 more wins, 5 of which were senior majors.

He has been inducted into the World Golf Hall of Fame in 1974 (in the first “wave” along with the likes of Sam Snead, Jack Nicklaus, Bobby Jones, Ben Hogan, Byron Nelson, Gary Player, Francis Ouimet, Gene Sarazen, Harry Vardon and Walter Hagen) and won the PGA Tour Lifetime Achievement Award, in 1998, which honors individuals who have made an outstanding contribution to the PGA TOUR over an extended period of time through their actions on and off the golf course.

He won the Vardon Trophy, awarded annually to the PGA TOUR’s leader in scoring average, 4 times in 1961, 1962, 1964 and 1967.

He was elected PGA Player of the Year in 1960 and 1962.

With 62 PGA TOUR wins, he is in 5^th place in an all-time “number of wins ranking”, having just been surpassed by Tiger Woods.

Out of those 62 wins, 7 were majors titles (4 Masters, 1 U.S. OPEN and 2 OPEN Championships). Arnie never won the PGA Championship, but finished second on three occasions.

The King played on 6 Ryder Cup teams and captained two. He also captained the Presidents Cup Team in 1996.

În timp ce turneul Arnold Palmer Invitational reuneşte în această săptămână la Bay Hill Club & Lodge cei mai buni jucători ai lumii, voi începe o serie de articole intitulată “Legendele Golfului”, care va prezenta cei mai buni golferi din istoria acestui sport, realizările lor, cât şi alte lucruri interesante despre ei.

Deci primul capitol al acestei serii va fi despre Arnold Palmer, “Regele” sau Arnie, cum îi spunea lumea. Palmer s-a născut în 1929 în Commonwealth-ul Pennsylvania ca fiu al unui îngrijitor de green-uri la pe atunci modestul Lacrobe Country Club. El îşi ajuta tatăl la muncă şi a ajuns astfel să înveţe foarte repede despre acest sport. În puţin timp, talentul lui a devenit vizibil, el reuşind primul său scor sub 70 la vârsta de 7 ani.

Printre acestea se numără şi un titlu la U.S. Open-ul din 1960 (când a revenit incredibil în ultima rundă, recuperând cele 7 lovituri ce-l despărţeau de liderul rundei a treia) dar şi două titluri la Open Championship în Marea Britanie în 1961 şi 1962. Palmer a mers dincolo de Atlantic într-o perioadă în care jucătorii americani nu se duceau şi prin aceasta a asigurat statutul acestui turneu ca unul dintre cele 4 turnee de mare şlem din fiecare an. Pe atunci, americanii nu se sinchiseau să călătorească atât de departe pentru a participa la o competiţie cu premii mici, dominată de europeni şi disputată pe aşa-numitele links, foarte diferite de traseele americane cu care erau obişnuiţi.

Arnold Palmer a continuat să câştige cel puţin un turneu în PGA TOUR până în 1971 şi a învins pentru ultima dată în tur în 1973 la Bob Hope Desert Classic. După aceasta, el a participat în turul pentru seniori (Senior PGA Tour, numit acum The Champions Tour) şi a obţinut 10 victorii, dintre care 5 au fost turnee de mare şlem pentru seniori.

Cu cele 62 de victorii în PGA TOUR, el se află pe locul 5 într-un clasament all-time a numărului de victorii, fiind depăşit doar în urmă cu trei săptămâni de Tiger Woods.

Din cele 62 de victorii, 7 au fost titluri de mare şlem (majors) : 4 Masters-uri, un U.S. Open şi 2 Open Championship. Arnie nu a câştigat niciodată PGA Championship, dar a fost foarte aproape, încheiând pe locul 2 în trei ocazii diferite.

Regele a făcut parte din 6 echipe de Ryder Cup şi a fost căpitanul echipei de 2 ori. A fost de asemenea căpitanul echipei de Presidents Cup în 1996.

Scores were high this weekend in Tampa Bay, Florida, at the PODS Championship. Adding to the toughness of the course was the bad weather which not only extended rounds and canceled tee times, but also added several shots on the scorecards of the pros competing for a nice purse of 5.3 million $, of which 954000 $ would go to the winner.

The first round saw scores between 65 and 84 on the par 71 Copperhead course at the Innisbrook Resort, with people like Lee Janzen, Bart Bryant, Kenny Perry and Stuart Appleby carding the lowest scores.

The second round extended until Saturday, as a thunderstorm interrupted the players who were competing on Friday afternoon. The cut was made at 3 over par and this sent home a lot of good golfers: Ernie Els (the Honda Classic winner from last week) , Steve Lowery and J.B. Holmes (in the top 10 of the FedExCup for last week), Brian Bateman and Vaughn Taylor (both carded low scores in the first round) among others...

Stewart Cink, the finalist of this year's Accenture Match Play Championship, was ahead of the pack after the third round and seemed to play some decent enough golf to win it, but he stumbled during his last 9 holes on Sunday and was overtaken by a solid-playing Sean O'Hair, who finished at 4 under for the tournament, 2 under for the last round. He was the only player to have no over par round and went on to win by 2 shots over six players who finished tied for 2nd. See the first part of the leaderboard underneath.

Adăugând la dificultatea traseului, vremea rea nu numai că a prelungit rundele şi dat peste cap programul, ci a şi adăugat mai multe lovituri pe scorecard-urile jucătorilor ce s-au întrecut pentru un premiu de 954000 $ , premiile totale fiind în valoare de 5,3 milioane $.

Prima rundă a văzut scoruri între 65 şi 84 pe traseul Copperhead de par 71 de la Innisbrook Resort, cu jucători ca Lee Janzen, Bart Bryant, Kenny Perry şi Stuart Appleby reuşind cele mai bune evoluţii.

Runda a doua s-a extins până sâmbătă, fulgerele şi furtuna întrerupând jucâtorii care evoluau vineri după-masă. Linia de cut s-a tras la 3 peste par şi astfel o mulţime de jucători buni au fost nevoiţi să plece acasă : Ernie Els (câştigătorul de săptămâna trecută de la Honda Classic) , Steve Lowery şi J.B. Holmes (ambii în primii 10 în clasamentul FedExCup de săptămâna trecută), Brian Bateman şi Vaughn Taylor (ambii cu scoruri foarte bune în prima rundă) printre alţii...

Stewart Cink, finalistul campionatului de Match Play Accenture de anul acesta, se afla în faţa tuturor după runda a treia şi părea să joace un golf destul de bun pentru a obţine victoria finală, dar s-a împiedicat de-a lungul ultimelor 9 cupe de duminică şi a fost depăşit de Sean O’Hair, care a terminat la 4 sub par pentru turneu, 2 sub par în ultima rundă. El a fost singurul jucător care nu a avut vreo rundă peste par şi a câştigat cu 2 lovituri avans faţă de 6 jucători ce au încheiat la egalitate pe locul 2.Prima parte a clasamentului poate fi văzută mai jos.

Tiger won the WGC Accenture Match Play Championship / Tiger a câştigat Campionatul WGC Accenture de Match Play

Power play, impressive, dominant - those can all be attributed to Tiger Woods after his win at the Accenture Championship. He defeated Stewart Cink in the final with a score of 8 & 7, across a 36 hole match which ended after 29. Tiger is now all about milestones and he reached another one after his win on Sunday: he is now 4th in the standings for all-time PGA TOUR wins, 1 short of Ben Hogan, one in front of Arnold Palmer. The names which surround him in that ranking are legendary: Sam Snead, Jack Nicklaus, Ben Hogan and Arnold Palmer. But everybody agrees that he deserves his place among them.

The third place match was won by last year's champion Henrik Stenson with 3 & 2 over Justin Leonard, the runner-up from the Bob Hope Chrysler Classic.

The second round produced some upsets with names like Mickelson, the British Open champion Harrington and Adam Scott out of the tournament, but like the players say, in match play there are no upsets...
The most interesting match of the second round was undoubtedly the one between the defending champion Henrik Stenson and Trevor Immelman. After 18 holes, the two were all square. After 6 extra holes, they were still all square, with people already wondering how long the match will be. But on the 25th hole ( 7th extra hole ) , Immelman drove his tee-shot onto the green with 20 feet for eagle while Stenson burried his drive in the greenside bunker. Stenson then recovered and brought his ball to 3 feet for a birdie opportunity. Immelman missed his eagle and left himself 6 feet for birdie and missed that one too.But par wasn't enough for Trevor as Stenson made his birdie putt and won the longest match of this year's championship.

Runda a doua a produs unele surprize, nume ca Mickelson, Harrington câştigătorul Open-ului britanic 2007 şi Adam Scott fiind eliminate, dar aşa cum susţin jucătorii, în competiţiile de match play nu există surprize, trebuie să te aştepţi la orice...
Cel mai interesant meci al rundei secunde a fost fără îndoială cel dintre cmapionul en-titre Henrik Stenson şi Trevor Immelman. După 18 cupe, cei doi se aflau încă la egalitate.După încă 6 cupe suplimentare, erau tot la egalitate, comentatorii întrebându-se când se va încheia oare partida. Dar la cupa a 25-a ( a 7-a cupă suplimentară) teeshot-ul lui Immelman a ajuns până pe green, având încă aprox. 6 metri pentru eagle în timp ce Stenson şi-a îngropat prima lovitură în bunkerul de nisip din vecinătatea greenului.Stenson şi-a revenit apoi ducându-şi mingea la 1 metru de cupă pentru o şansă de birdie. Immelman a ratat eagle-ul, lăsându-şi încă 2 metri pentru birdie. A ratat şi birdie-ul, dar par nu a fost de ajuns pentru că Stenson a făcut birdie şi l-a trimis acasă, câştigând astfel cea mai lungă partidă din campionatul de anul acesta.

The Tiger Woods - J.B. Holmes match from the Bobby Jones bracket was the most entertaining of the first round. Tiger began his match with an out-of-bounds drive and seemed to struggle in his long play. J.B. Holmes was 3 up with 5 holes remaining, when Tiger produced one of the most incredible comebacks in match play history, with a birdie-birdie-birdie-eagle-par on his last 5 holes, to edge his opponent to the second round. His eagle got the biggest roar of the first round from the crowds in Tucson.

Ernie Els, Jim Furyk, Rory Sabbatini and Justin Rose were eliminated by their pairs, while Mickelson, Stricker and Adam Scott among others advanced through. Stricker managed to do it only after 2 extra holes against an in-shape Daniel Chopra.

The first WGC event of the season is under way starting today, with the top 64 players competing to win the title in Tucson Arizona. This, of course, is a match play event, with the winners from each duel advancing for the next round. The brackets are formed and some interesting matches are featured in the first round today:

Phil "Lefty" Mickelson at Riviera CC / Phil "Stângaciul" Mickelson la Riviera CC

Phil Mickelson started his season struggling with some back pain, but managed to get a good tournament going at the Buick Invitational to finish tied for 6^th. He then lost a playoff against J.B. Holmes at the FBR Open to finish second in a tournament which he could have easily won. The only thing that prevented him from doing just that was a bad putt per GIR average, missing a lot of eagle putts. One week later, he carded an 11 on a Saturday hole and missed the cut at Pebble Beach for the Pro-Am that he was defending. Now he was back, at the legendary Riviera CC for The Northern Trust Open, a tough tournament where not even Tiger Woods or Jack Nicklaus managed to win. Phil however finished second last year, after leading the tournament until the 72^nd hole. He carded a bogey at the famous par 4 18^th and Charles Howell III forced him into a playoff. He lost the playoff and so the tournament eluded him, being one of the few on the West Coast to do so.

The Northern Trust Open from last weekend continued a streak of several weeks with gorgeous weather in California. Only the winds troubled the players late on Thursday and early on Friday. K.J. Choi held a 1 shot lead after the 1^st round on the par 71 course at Riviera Country Club, after a bogey-free round of 6-under par.

Phil Mickelson or “Lefty” as the fans call him (he is right handed but has a left handed swing) came from behind to post a brilliant 7-under par on day two.

The third round produced the shot of the tournament which helped Jeff Quinney to just one shot behind Mickelson. It was this hole-in-one made by Quinney on the par 3 6^th that was on all the highlight shows of Saturday evening:

The fourth round Sunday was action-packed with Mickelson, Quinney and Rollins in the final group. However after the starting holes, it became clear to everybody it was a 2-man battle between Phil and Jeff, with Rollins dropping shots early on. With the front nine holes finished, Quinney was in front of Mickelson by one shot. But Lefty recovered when he made back-to-back birdies on 10 and 11 and by scrambling on the next few holes. Quinney however, who had a fabulous record of 214 holes without a 3-putt, dropped shots; Mickelson held it together and when they came to the last tee of the 18^th hole, he had already secured his victory having a comfortable margin of 3 shots in hand.

Although Jeff pleased the crowds, gathered at the “arena” green on the 18^th, with a nice birdie, it was only enough for second on a beautiful sunny day in L.A.

Mickelson finally won his first tournament this season, at Riviera, a place where he hadn't won before, a place full of history, where the lights of Ben Hogan once shined .(more on Ben Hogan, Jack Nicklaus and other golf legends in upcoming posts in the topic “Golf History”)

Phil Mickelson şi-a început sezonul chinuit de dureri de spate, dar a reuşit un turneu bun la Buick Invitational, terminând la egalitate pe locul 6. Apoi a pierdut un playoff împotriva lui J.B. Phil Mickelson sau “Stângaciul” (Lefty) cum este numit de fani (este dreptaci dar are un swing de mâna stângă) a venit tare din urmă şi a reuşit un foarte bun 7 sub par în ziua a doua.

A treia rundă a produs lovitura săptamânii care l-a ajutat pe Jeff Quinney să ajungă până la o lovitură în spatele lui Mickelson. A fost un as făcut de Quinney la cupa a 6-a de par 3, arătat la toate ştirile sportive de sâmbătă seara :

Ultima rundă de duminică a fost una foarte interesantă, cu Mickelson, Quinney şi Rollins în ultimul grup. Cu toate acestea, după primele cupe, a fost clar pentru toată lumea ca va fi o luptă în doi între Mickelson şi Quinney, Rollins pierzând contactul cu liderii încă din debutul rundei.
