The Irish Padraig Harrington managed to defend his title at the Open Championship on Sunday as he finished at +3, four shots clear of the field. The veteran aussie Greg Norman and the brit Ian Poulter were the closest challengers but did not rise to the occasion, with Padraig being 4-under-par for the last 6 holes, including an eagle at the par 5 17th hole.

Irlandezul Padraig Harrington a reuşit să-şi apere titlul obţinut anul trecut la Carnoustie, încheiând la +3 la Open-ul Britanic 2008 cu patru lovituri înaintea tuturor celorlalţi jucători. Veteranul australian Greg Norman şi englezul Ian Poulter au fost cei mai apropiaţi de irlandez, dar nu s-au ridicat la nivelul acestuia. The Open Championship Third Round / A treia rundă la Open-ul Britanic

Royal Birkdale was difficult to play during the first two days, but even more so during moving day Saturday. Strong winds had an enormous importance as the links are exposed to the Irish Sea.

There were no under-par rounds the entire day, with only four players managing to play the 18 holes at even par. All four made huge jumps on the leaderboard, with Simon Wakefield being the highest placed of the four, in fourth place, at +5.

The leader heading into the final day is Greg Norman, the great "shark" from Australia, who carded a 2-over-par 72 which gives him a 2 shot lead over second placed Padraig Harrington and K.J. Choi.

The defending champion, Padraig Harrington, had a very good round of +2 while others like Camilo Villegas lost ground with rounds of 9-over-par 79 or worse.

The last group on Sunday will pair together Harrington and Norman, as Harrington was earlier in the clubhouse than Choi.

Royal Birkdale a pus foarte multe probleme jucătorilor de-a lungul primelor două zile, dar şi mai multe pe parcursul rundei de sâmbătă. Vânturile puternice au avut o importanţă covârşitoare căci links-urile sunt expuse Mării Irlandei.

Nu au existat runde sub-par în această a treia zi, doar patru jucători reuşind să joace cele 18 cupe la even par. Toţi patru au făcut salturi mari în clasament, Simon Wakefield fiind cel mai bine plasat dintre cei patru după ziua de azi, aflându-se la +5 pentru turneu.

Liderul după 54 de cupe este Greg Norman, marele "rechin" din Australia, care a înregistrat un 2-peste-par 72 care i-a oferit două lovituri în faţa celor ce se află pe locul doi: Padraig Harrington şi K.J. Choi.

The Open Championship Second Round / A doua rundă la Open-ul Britanic

The 53 year old shark Greg Norman led throughout the entire second round, only to be passed by K.J. Choi late in the afternoon. Choi is the only player with an under-par aggregate score at -1.

Norman posted his second even par 70 round on Friday and is just one back behind the South Korean.

Camilo Villegas stunned everyone with a 65, by far the best round of the tournament so far, managing 5 consecutive birdies in his last 5 holes. He is in third place at +1.

Despite a troubling injury to his wrist, last year's champion - Padraig Harrington - is in the mix at +2, along with Allenby, Duval, Furyk, Mediate, Noren and McDowell.

Scoring was high on Thursday as rain, wind and cold dominated the links at Royal Birkdale. Among the victims of bad weather, Mickelson who shot a 9-over par 79.

This year, the links at Royal Birkdale in Southport, England will host the 137th Open Championship (British Open).

With Tiger missing out on his first major tournament since turning pro and Kenny Perry sticking to his decision to not make the trip across the pond to the British Open (instead playing in the U.S. Bank Championship in Milwaukee), the top two players in the FedEx Cup standings are not here this week. The field is nonetheless very strong with the likes of Phil Mickelson, Stewart Cink and Sergio Garcia, the new wonder Anthony Kim, Singh, Choi, Ogilvy, Weekley, Furyk, Immelman, Adam Scott and Justin Leonard. Last year's champion, Padraig Harrington is having some problems with his wrist and it is not yet clear whether he will defend his title or not.

Past trips to Royal Birkdale for the Open Championship have seen winners like Arnold Palmer (1961), Lee Trevino (1971) and most recently Mark O'Meara (1998). Who will it be this time?
