Garcia and Goydos on the island-green

THE PLAYERS Championship is the signature event of the PGA TOUR, contested each year on Pete Dye's masterpiece - the Stadium Course TPC at Sawgrass, in Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida.
The best field of golfers in any event is brought together to compete for a coveted crystal trophy and a winning share of 1 710 000 USD. No one has ever won the event in two consecutive years, since it started in 1974, when Jack Nicklaus secured the first of his 3 victories there. He is still the only golfer to win it three times.
The first round saw Sergia Garcia at the top of the leaderboard, with a 6-under 66. He birdied 7 holes (among which all four par 5s) and bogeyed the 8th. Kenny Perry and Paul Goydos had the next best scores of the first day, 2 shots behind Garcia.
Friday's round came with strong winds and that made low scores disappear from the scoring cards. The best round belonged to 50-year old two-time Masters winner Bernhard Langer, who shot a 5-under 67 which included 4 birdies and an eagle. Stephen Ames signed for a 68 while David Toms and Kenny Perry got away with 2-under 70 rounds. Some were not that fortunate, K.J. Choi for example followed a first-round 79 with a second-round 78, missing the cut. Zach Johnson: 76 79. Angel Cabrera: 70 81. All were under the cut line, which was drawn at 3-over after Friday's round.
The third day (Moving day) was a good opportunity for many players to catch up with the leaders. Greg Kraft, Charlie Wi, Tim Petrovic and Tom Lehman did just that with under-par rounds, but the leader was Paul Goydos on Saturday night. Goydos had under-par rounds during the first three days and looked forward to Sunday's final round to wrap up what would have been the most important win of his career (He had 2 wins on the PGA TOUR: 1996 - Bay Hill Invitational; 2007 - Sony Open Hawaii).
But the Spaniard Sergio Garcia still had a word to say in the last round, as he wanted to become the first European player to win here since 1987. The weather and the Stadium Course had a word to say too. The winds were stronger than ever and the scoring grew accordingly.
Only 8 players were under-par on Sunday, Sergio Garcia and Jeff Quinney were among them. Garcia started off with a bogey followed by 5 pars, but Goydos was 2-over on his front nine. Despite a pair of birdies at the 10th and 12th, Goydos lost his lead after bogeying the 14th, 15th and 18th. Garcia, in turn, birdied the 11th, 12th and the tough 14th. He finished in the penultimate group and waited for Goydos and Perry to complete their rounds to see if his score was enough to force a playoff. Perry shot a 9-over 81, but didn't have the worst round out there: Charlie Wi and Jesper Parnevik who were tied for 14th after Saturday, had 13-over 85 rounds in the last round. That shows just how brutal the conditions were out there.
The par-3 17th hole, the signature hole, the infamous island-green played 0.5 points over par on average.
With the bogey on the 18th (the hardest hole on the golf course) Goydos gave Garcia a playoff chance, which started at the 17th.
Goydos teed off first but after hitting it with a wedge, his ball ballooned on him and sank just a couple of feet in front of the green. It looked over for Goydos, as Garcia hit his shot to 4 feet, with probably the best golf shot of the day, given the circumstances.
Goydos hit his third from the drop area but didn't get it close. His 4th came to a stop to about 22 inches of the hole. Garcia missed the birdie putt, but tapped in for par to win THE PLAYERS Championship 2008.
Garcia's putting isn't the greatest on the tour, but this week, it was better than usual and Garcia rewarded his putter with a kiss just moments after the winning tap in. He should have kissed his big clubs too, cause he was first in driving accuracy and GIR (greens in regulation).
And yet again, the defending champion doesn't manage to follow-up with a second win the next year. Phil Mickelson finished tied for 21st place at 4-over for the tournament, 6-over on the last day.
Just 4 guys were under-par for the week.

Campionatul THE PLAYERS este turneul de referinţă al PGA TOUR, desfăşurat în fiecare an pe traseul capodoperă al marelui arhitect Pete Dye - Stadium Course at TPC Sawgrass, în Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida.
Cel mai bun field de golferi din orice turneu se strânge în fiecare an să joace pentru un mult-dorit trofeu de cristal şi un premiu de 1 710 000 de dolari. Nimeni nu a câştigat turneul în doi ani consecutivi, de când a început în 1974, când Jack Nicklaus a obţinut prima din cele trei victorii ale sale aici. El este în continuare singurul jucător care a câştigat acest turneu de trei ori.
Prima rundă l-a adus pe Sergio Garcia în fruntea clasamentului, cu un scor de 6-sub-par 66. El a obţinut 7 birdie-uri (dintre care patru la cupele de par 5) şi a făcut bogey la cupa a 8-a. Kenny Perry şi Paul Goydos au avut următoarele scoruri ale rundei, la două lovituri în spatele lui Garcia.
Runda de vineri a venit cu un vânt puternic şi acest lucru a determinat dispariţia scorurilor joase de pe carneţelele jucătorilor. Runda a treia, numită şi Moving Day datorită schimbărilor de clasament ce au loc în această penultimă zi, a reprezentat o bună oportunitate pentru mulţi jucători să îi prindă din urmă pe lideri. Greg Kraft, Charlie Wi, Tim Petrovic şi Tom Lehman chiar au făcut acest lucru cu runde sub-par, dar liderul de sâmbătă seara a fost Paul Goydos. El a avut scoruri bune în primele 3 zile şi aştepta cu nerăbdare ultima zi pentru a încheia un turneu cu ceea ce ar fi fost cea mai mare victorie dn cariera sa (Goydos avea două victorii în PGA TOUR: 1996 - Bay Hill Invitational; 2007 - Open-ul Sony din Hawaii).
Dar spaniolul Sergio Garcia mai avea încă un cuvânt de spus în ultima rundă, vrând să devină primul învingător european din 1987 încoace. Vremea şi traseul Stadium Course au avut de asemenea un cuvânt de spus. Vântul s-a înteţit mai puternic decât oricând şi scorurile au crescut.
Doar 8 jucători au fost sub-par duminică, Sergio Garcia şi Jeff Quinney aflându-se printre aceştia. Garcia a început cu un bogey, urmat de 5 par-uri, dar Goydos era deja la 2-peste-par trecând de primele nouă cupe. Deşi a reuşit două birdie-uri la cupele 10 şi 12, Goydos a pierdut şefia clasamentului după bogey-uri la cupele 14 şi 15 . Garcia, la rândul lui, a făcut birdie-uri la cupele 11, 12 şi la dificila cupă a 14-a. A încheiat în penultimul grup al zilei şi i-a aşteptat pe Goydos şi pe Kenny Perry să îşi termine rundele pentru a vedea dacă scorul său a fost de ajuns pentru a forţa un playoff. Perry a postat un 81 (9-peste-par), dar nu a avut cea mai slabă rundă de duminică: Charlie Wi şi Jesper Parnevik, care erau la egalitate pe locul 14, au avut runde de 13-peste-par (85) în ultima rundă. Asta demostrează clar cât de brutale au fost condiţiile de joc.
Cupa a 17-a de par 3, cupa-semnătură a traseului, green-ul insulă a fost jucat în medie cu 0.5 lovituri peste par.
Cu bogey la a 18-a cupă (cea mai grea cupă de pe traseu), Goydos i-a acordat lui garcia o şansă în playoff, care a început la cupa a 17-a.
Goydos a început primul de pe tee, după tragerea la sorţi, dar după ce a lovit cu wedge-ul, mingea a prins mai multă înălţime decât şi-ar fi dorit şi s-a scufundat în apă cu 1 metru înaintea green-ului. Părea să se fi încheiat pentru Paul, căci Garcia şi-a trimis lovitura la 1 metru şi jumătate de steag - probabil cea mai bună lovitură a zilei, date fiind circumstanţele în care a reuşit-o.
Goydos a lovit a treia lovitură (a doua fiind drop-ul mingii) din suprafaţa de drop, dar nu a lăsat-o aproape. A patra lovitură s-a oprit şi ea în afara cupei, la vreo jumătate de metru. Garcia a ratat putt-ul pentru birdie, dar a îndeplinit o simplă formalitate de langă cupă pentru par şi victoria în Campionatul THE PLAYERS 2008.
Putting-ul lui Garcia nu este printre cele mai bune din tur, dar în această săptămână a fost mai bun ca de obicei şi Garcia şi-a recompensat putter-ul cu un sărut imediat după putt-ul câştigător. Ar fi trebuit să-şi sărute şi crosele mari, căci a fost numărul 1 la acurateţea drive-ului şi GIR (green-uri în regulation).
Şi din nou, campionul en-titre nu reuşeşte să reediteze performanţa în anul următor. Phil Mickelson a încheiat la egalitate pe locul 21, la +4 (4-peste-par) scorul total, 6-peste-par în ultima rundă.
Doar patru jucători au terminat sub par săptămâna.
