This weekend, the AT&T Pebble Beach National Pro-Am 2008 finished in a play-off, the first time that happened since 1992. An improbable winner came out: Steve Lowery. The 47 year old, who struggled with a wrist injury last year and hadn’t won a tournament in the last 7 years (199 tournaments), managed to win the competition at the famous golf course by beating Vijay Singh.

After the first three rounds, the cut was made at even par with 70 players making it to Sunday.Because of the new rules enforced on the PGA TOUR as of this season, only 60 of those 70 players could compete on Sunday, with the other 10 players making the cut, earning points and prize money but not allowed to play on Sunday. This rule was created to avoid overcrowding Sunday’s events with so many players.Vijay Singh shared the lead with Dudley Hart on Saturday evening at 9 under.
Among those that missed the cut was Phil Mickelson, the defending champion of the AT&T event and runner-up last week at the FBR Open. Mickelson was 2 under for the tournament through 13 holes on Saturday, competing on Pebble Beach.He was in contention to make the cut, being 7 shots off the lead. But then, DISASTER STRUCK!! He teed off on the par 5 14th hole but missed the fairway right, into the corner of the dogleg.He then hit a hybrid to get to the green in two, but missed it right and his ball ended up out of bounds.Fooled by the good lie in the rough, he tried it again but with the same result: out of bounds. Then he took a 5-iron out of his bag and brought it onto the fairway. His seventh shot with a wedge spun off the green, down a slope, under a tree (both Lowery and Singh would have similar shots from that lie in Sunday’s round). The next shot made it just halfway up the slope, needing a chip onto the green.He two-putted after leaving the chip 15 feet short of the hole.Here is a visual on his shots on the 14th, the hole that ended his tournament:
On Sunday, Dudley Hart carded an even par 72, saving his round with three consecutive birdies on the last three holes, after being 3 over for the day before the 16th tee. Vijay Singh looked very comfortable in the lead, until his play fell apart when he bogeyed the 14th, 15th and 16th. Meanwhile, Steve Lowery, one group in front of Singh birdied the 17th to move to 10 under for the tournament, one in front of Singh.Both players made par on their next holes and so Singh needed a birdie on the par 5 18th to tie for the lead and force the playoff with Lowery. Vijay’s tee-shot hit one of the two famous fairway trees and bounced to a good lie just next to it.On his second he hit a 3-wood to the fairway in front of the green. He had about 50 yards to the hole and managed to bring it close with a wedge, the ball almost falling in, for an eagle.He made the putt for birdie, and Lowery came out of the clubhouse to begin the playoff.
Lowery drew the smaller number and began with an excellent tee-shot on the very same 18th hole.Singh’s drive ended up in a fairway bunker, right of the famous trees.His next shot was a miss-hit and the ball nearly remained in the bunker.He had a lot of work to save this playoff.Lowery’s 3-wood shot was again very good, laying up to about 100 yards.Singh tried the impossible but his third got burried in the front-green bunker.Lowery continued his streak of good shots and brought it to 7 feet.Although Singh managed to excavate it out of that bunker face and then make a 10 footer for par, which was a great score after a drive in the bunker, a miss-hit and another shot into the bunker, it was Lowery’s day. He calmly sank his 7-footer for birdie and received the trophy from none other than Clint Eastwood.

În acest weekend, turneul AT&T Pebble Beach National Pro-Am 2008 s-a încheiat cu un play-off pentru prima dată după 1992. Învingătorul a fost unul neaşteptat: Steve Lowery. În vârstă de 47 de ani, chinuit încă de o accidentare la încheietura unei mâini anul trecut, nemaicâştigând un turneu în ultimii 7 ani (199 de turnee la care a participat şi nu a învins), Steve a reuşit victoria în această competiţie pe acest traseu de golf faimos, învingându-l pe Vijay Singh.
Deşi vreau să mă concentrez mai mult asupra evenimentului şi asupra traseului de la Pebble Beach, voi face aceasta în postul următor, deci iată ce s-a întâmplat în turneul profesioniştilor.Fiecare jucător a trebuit să treacă peste cele trei trasee (Poppy Hills, Spyglass Hill şi Pebble Beach) de joi până sâmbătă şi apoi, dacă se califica, lua parte la runda finală la Pebble Beach.
După primele trei runde, cut-ul (limita de calificare) a fost stabilit la even par cu 70 de jucători deasupra liniei.Din cauza noii reguli introduse de PGA TOUR începând cu acest sezon, doar 60 dintre aceştia au participat efectiv la runda finală, ceilalţi 10 calificându-se, câştigând puncte in clasamentul FedExCup şi bani, dar fără a mai participa duminică. Această regulă a fost creată pentru a evita o aglomerare a traseului duminică în runda finală a turneelor.Vijay Singh împărţea prima poziţie cu Dudley Hart, sâmbătă seara.
Printre cei care au ratat calificarea, aflându-se sub cut, a fost şi Phil Mickelson, campionul en-titre a turneului şi ocupantul locului doi săptămâna trecută la Open-ul FBR.Mickelson se afla la 2 sub par per turneu, după 13 cupe în runda a treia sâmbătă, la Pebble Beach.El avea încă şanse intacte de a se califica, fiind la 7 lovituri de lideri.Dar apoi, DEZASTRU!! La cupa a 14-a, de par 5, a lovit de pe tee în dreapta, în afara fairway-ului, chiar în interiorul acestui „dogleg dreapta”. Apoi a încercat să joace agresiv şi să ajungă la green din a doua lovitură, lovind un hibrid din iarba deasă.Lovitura lui a ieşit de pe traseu, ajungând în “out-of-bounds”.Cunoscut pentru riscurile pe care le ia, Mickelson a mai încercat o dată lovitura, dar cu acelaşi rezultat.A luat apoi un iron de 5 şi a dus mingea pe fairway la 60 de metri de green.A şaptea lovitură cu un wedge a părăsir greenul către stânga, coborând o pantă abruptă, sub un copac (atât mingea lui Lowery cât şi a lui Singh a ajuns duminică în acelaşi loc umbrit). Următoarea lovitură nu a urcat decât jumătate din pantă, fiind astfel nevoie de încă un chip si două putt-uri pâna când mingea s-a oprit în cupă. Duminică, Dudley Hart a reuşit doar un even par 72, salvându-şi runda cu trei birdieuri consecutive la ultimele trei cupe, după ce fusese la 3 peste par până la al 16-lea tee.Vijay Singh se afla într-o poziţie confortabilă la conducere, până când jocul său s-a dezintegrat cu bogey-uri la cupele 14 15 şi 16.Între timp, Steve Lowery, cu un grup înaintea lui Vijay, a reuşit un birdie la cupa 17, ajungând astfel la 10 sub par pentru turneu, cu o lovitură în faţa lui Singh.Ambii jucători au făcut par la următoarea cupă şi deci Singh avea nevoie de un birdie la cupa a 18-a par 5, pentru a-l egala şi a forţa un play-off.Lovitura de pe tee a ricoşat norocos dintr-unul din cei doi copaci vestiţi din mijlocul fairwayului.A doua lovitură l-a adus mai aproape de green.Mai avea încă 50 de metri până la stea, reuşind o lovitura a treia excelentă cu un wedge, care chiar a foar aproape de a cădea în cupă, pentru eagle şi victorie.În schimb a reuşit putt-ul pentru birdie şi l-a scos pe Lowery din clubhouse pentru playoff. Lowery a început cu un tee-shot perfect, fiind urmat de Singh cu o lovitură până în bunker-ul de nisip din dreapta fairway-ului.Scăparea din bunker a venit, dar după un contact slab cu mingea, ceea ce a lăsat încă mare distanţă până la green.Lowery a jucat perfect până la 100 de metri de steag, cu un wood de 3.Singh a încercat să joace agresiv dar a treia sa lovitură a ajuns în bunkerul ce păzeşte green-ul.Lowery, încă o lovitura foarte bună până la mai puţin de 3 metri de cupă, lăsându-şi o şansă de birdie.Deşi a excavat o minge îngropată în peretele bunker-ului de nisip şi a scufundat un putt de la peste 3 metri pentru par, ceea ce a fost incredibil, având în vedere loviturile proaste ce le-au precedat pe acestea, ziua a fost a lui Lowery. Acesta a scufundat putt-ul pentru birdie şi a primit trofeul de la Clint Eastwood insuşi.
